How nerve racking is hiring a car? I was liable if someone else hit me? Crazy! However, the rental went ok. They tried saying there were stone chips in the paintwork; however, I wasn't paying for that and they gave up the chase. My employer has now asked for proof of the level of insurance the company provided. This will ensure I get my mileage back for the journeys I covered whilst in the hire car. Thrifty so far have sent me three emails; each with a different document scanned in. None of these documents state anywhere the level of cover provided to those who have taken Renter's insurance out. I've responded again; spelling it out in very basic language, what I need to see. Lets see what they send me this time.

We had prebooked and prepaid for Thrifty car hire from Chicago O`Hare. All good - pick up and drop off without hassle or event . Week after returning home found that credit card had been mystifyingly debited an extra £300 odd pounds for `extras`- about which we knew not. Asked Carrentals to investigate which they did efficiently and it appeared that we had been charged at the pick up desk for extra insurance and other items of insurance which we hadn`t asked about, had ordered nor wanted! Scrutinised my Thrifty documents in retrospect and found that various extras had been highlighted in yellow and `agreed` written next to these items - no we hadn`t ! Went to the Thrifty website and found a page for Complaints/Difficulties- outlined the above in a somewhat `disgusted of UK` manner not expecting to hear anything further and nursing my £300+ loss. However lo and behold within the week came an apology from Thrfty HQ Complaints dept and a promise to refund the card the £300. The recently arrived credit card statement has confirmed this and as I replied to the person who authorised the refund - my faith in (corporate) humanity is restored. (enclosed added later)

Rent a car at Keflavik Airport/ Iceland. Brand new car, Mazda 3. Because of too many negative reviews of all the car rental company's at Iceland I checked the car very precisely. We found one scratch. Friendly stafff at the counter. Some questions about additional insurances, like I expected, but it wasn't annoying. When we returned the car I demand a signed paper that confirmed that the car was ok, just like I have signed when I got the car two weeks ago. They couldn't give me one because the car was dirty. I told them that they can clean the car and that I will wait for it, even if it should take two hours. They refused and told me not to worrie about it. I explained them that I want to make sure that they don't charge me any money when I am back home. The 'boss' wasn't friendly and wasn't willing to help. I told him not to charge me any money and left. In short, great car, no suprises afterwards, good price and friendly and unfriendly staff.

Picked up the car at Atlanta Airport (although it was not actully inside the airport, it was a mile down the road).
Got to the sales desk where there were 2 staff who didn't have a CLUE what was going on, stood there for like 20 minutes while they messed about with paperwork.
Every time a 'Thrifty BlueChip Member' walks in you are forgoten about and they are served.
Eventually got the keys, but it was not the type of car we asked for! Went back to the office and did more paper work and got the right car.
