The Square is buzzing again and the new team, new look and great beer have rescued this fine country pub. We have eaten there five times since the re-opening and the food is definitely a step above the usual pub grub in terms of quality. For example, the burgers (my favourite) are really juicy and taste of steak - apparently they are made from locally reared beef. Guest beers like Mary Jane from Ilkley Brewery and Copper Dragon from Skipton keep me happy and there is a vast range of bottled beers/lager plus a good selection of wines. Sunday lunch(rated best ever by my brother) is very popular so you need to book or arrive early. We are already booked in for a pre Christmas dinner and the menu certainly looks good ... judging from the food we have had so far I'm looking forward to another success.

First visit since takeover and what a difference. Service and food very good and value for money. Especially recommend the spare ribs I had, lot s of them and brill BBQ sticky sauce. Had given up on the place because of better local competition but will definitely be back. I hope they keep their current high standards but the problem then will be getting a table.

I ate here with my wife on Sept 9th 2011 . We were welcomed by Helen and enjoyed the refurbished tables and chairs which are VERY comfy. We ordered a Ceaser Salad with a side order of chips which were excellent, obviously the new chef has take this resteraunt to his heart and we followed this with sticky toffee puding - - -again really nice. This eating house has seen some "Dark days " in the past but is now well worth a visit. Its a Pheonix rising from the ashes.

I have now eaten at the square and compass several times sic it has re-opened and each time the food and serice were excellent. The staff are friendly and very welcoming. Also the roaring fire is a very welcome sight on a winters day.I am very surprised to read the negative comment above I can only assume this person was bitten by the christmas grinch!!!!!

We hadn't booked on Mother's Day, but turned up with 6 adults and 4 children (all under 7) and enjoyed a delicious Sunday Lunch, with homemade food, which was excellent. We all enjoyed it and are going again soon. Kids were made very welcome and allowed to use the function room adjacent to play in and were even given balloons.
The only criticism is that service seemed a little confused, all young staff, without much of a system. It was not very busy, especially for Mother's Day. Food great and we were in no rush.

Really liked the cosy area by the fire. The service was great and our food was served quickly. We walk in the area a lot and will certainly be back with our friends

Called in to try after new management had taken over. Quiet but had plenty of choice where to sit. Food delicious, my boyfriends steak was described as the best he had tasted in ages. Chips looked home made and were perfectly cooked nice and crispy but fluffy on the inside. My butternut squash was beautifully presented and tasted divine. Will definately go again.

Used Square and Compass For a business presentation and lunch. Function room was the right size for my needs, staff were helpful and friendly. Set meal afterwards was served outside normal hours without complaint, and was simple but delicious - enjoyed by all 20 members of the group. I wont hesitate to entertain at the Square and Compass again.

I have to say, I've read some of these comments and I can't see why everyone is disappointed with the square and compass. I've had meany meals there and they've all been really tasty, cooked to perfection and the staff are very friendly!

The Square and Compass in North Rigton gives warm, friendly, relaxed and traditional English pub atmosphere; not over-bearing and pretentious like some places nor down-market and systemised like many other chain pubs. Good food at a fair price in comfortable surroundings.
