“Bonny Long Legs”

★★★★☆

written by on 23/12/2013

Mine is an 06 carb T100, bought new and now has 35K miles on her. She has Givi 990 screen, Oxford heated grips,Triumph King & Queen seat, Renntech rack, GIVI 45 litre topbox, Oxford big throw overs and I use 10 litre bicycle panniers over the tank, plus a tank bag when two up touring with my wife. From new, fitted with Scottoiler using EP80 gear oil. 19tooth front and 42 tooth rear sprockets. The front needs turning over every 10K miles and the chain goes 20K. The rear is still fine, after 25K usage. Front brakes 20K, rear 17K. Standard shocks and lights, never needed to upgrade. We go 100miles and stop for coffee/fuel, then go again. Last trip Plymouth/Roscoff/Cl.Ferrand/Millau Bridge/Valencia/Seville/Lagos [Algarve] Lisbon/Serra Estrellas and home to UK. 3,500 miles in 16 riding days. Now time for an oil change [every 10k miles and semi-synth], new rear pads and we are off again. We cruise at 60 mph/60mpg. This is year 42 on bikes for us, with our combined age of 119 years. We have an FJR 1300 in the garage at home, bought for long distance European touring. After 10K FJR miles we reverted to Bonny Long Legs for touring and must get round to selling the FJR soon. Why the Bonny ? it's at home on whatever road or dirt track you ride on, overloaded or not. The FJR likes 90mph on motorways, which is nice if you like that, but really boring for us. Put it on twisties in the mountains or a little bit of gravel and the FJR is really hard work. Mr Bloor, sir, you have an excellent motorcycle in the Bonny, pity about being forced into fuel injection though. Mind you, the AMAL re-carbed conversion goes really quite well.....Yes you can convert them back. And in our local Devon riding group, so far there have been two BMW LT's one Guzzi 1200 and two others I forget, sold and swopped for Bonny's.

“Brilliant bike let down by plank seat and hard...”

Brilliant bike let down by plank seat and hard suspension. If you like classic styling with air cooled looks and the elusive grin factor then the T100 Bonnie is the bike for you. Looking around my local dealer this one jumped out at me. Fitted with an Arrow stainless two into one the classic 60's styling just hit the spot and the exhaust note is glorious without being too loud. Now run in, handling is far too harsh with no suspension adjustment except preload at the rear. Even the softest setting is hard and I am 220 lbs. Laid over at 80mph on a long sweeping curve with a rippled surface, vision is blurred and you cannot push harder. And, no rear mudguard stay or grab rail and No center stand! For me this spoils an otherwise perfect bike but I still LOVE IT!....

Seems typical for all modern Triumph bikes, the are set up with very harsh high speed compression.

I've put in a 642 mile day, with no discomfort from the seat. I added a center stand almost as soon as I bought the Bonneville, and it's a little harder to hoist up than my K75. I've adjusted to that, and I love riding the bike.

Easy fixes for both! Bikes would be boring if they were completely perfect when we bought them!

OK had for 6 months and me age 47
Rode 250cc then 125s back in the 80s on L plate then passed test on an Automatic in 2005............DOH!! finally got around to Manual test and picked up this for 3k Wow what a babe, plenty of power, beautiful, and v v v easy to ride
Had an electrical prob' that took 2 months to find so I kept breaking down in the wet, the AA were getting sick of rescue. Found the fault and now bike goes brill'
Last Sunday returned from Penzance to London (320 miles) bike was smooooth as could be :) Top speed 110 MPH 100 mile per 10 pound tank at today's prices (1.20 per liter)
Took a while to adjust to Bike riding as opposed to Scooter and my legs and back ached a little, but the T100 is actually quite roomy when compared to other bikes in similar class so was just old man me :( ha ha
No petrol gauge, clock, top box, or any fancy stuff, just a dammm beauty

written by AndyWilson on 21/05/2009

Like many, I am a returning rider well into my 50's, and having owned 2 Bonnies back in the 70's and 80's, I can say that the 2009 T100 version is a huge improvement and a great bike. Smooth pulling and much better top-end; great handling, and just a hint of vibration to remind of the older machines. The only disappointment is the exhaust note which is pretty feeble compared with the old Bonnie "roar". I would have thought Triumph could do better despite the tough emissions regulations.

I am new to motorcycling. Last week I passed my test (Direct Access) yesterday I bought a Triumph Bonneville T100 865cc straight out of the showroom. I also rode one yesterday for the first time. All I can say it was wonderful. Everything worked smoothly, the handling was superb. I felt as if I had finally arrived in the world of motorcycling. I can understand why many of the reviews say this is the greatest bike ever made. I am proud to own a triumph and be part of British motorcycle history. I am 59 years of age.

★★★★★

written by Bikey Mike on 21/04/2009

I bought my black and gold Triumph Bonneville T100 865cc, 2006 model at one year old, 420 miles on the clock. She has fork gaiters, a GIVI 660 screen, heated bars, tank knee pads, centre stand, a thunderbird seat and rear rack with grab rail. All were fitted by the original owner and included in the trade-in for my Transalp.
Being 54 years old, had bikes since 14, passed my advanced test, currently also owning a 72 Daytona and MT 350 Harley, having done several cross continent rides, owned many Jap/BMW/HD bikes, I think I can comment from a point of knowledge. This is the best bike ever made.

The bike is a Carte Blanche, as standard it needs some mods and tweeks to get it right. Some items are too retro to be practical, Ignition switch relocation to between clocks where it should be, removal of Air injection, less restrictive exhausts and rejetting, Fit Ikon or Hagon shocks with front progressive springs, no mainstand, fiddly 1970s steering lock, There are plenty of aftermarket bits to spruce up your Bonny if you are prepared to dig deep in the pockets.

I enjoy riding my Truimph Bonneville especially after I changed the pipes it now sounds like a Truimph, beautiful sound that turns heads particularly old heads. The bike is easy to ride, handles well, the disc brakes are adequate, although a 2nd disc on the front wheel would increase the stopping power when the bike is push hard. The finish on the bike is very good from the paint work to the quality of the chrome.

★★★★★

written by on 17/04/2008

Eliminating the Airbox, fitting the carbs with slip on filters, fitting a free flowing exhaust and rejetting the carbs (42 pilot, 148 main, 1 shim on the needle) will greatly increase rear wheel horsepower and give the bike much more midrange punch.
Fitting the suspension with good aftermarket shock absorbers will greatly inhance the Bonnie's handling characteristics.

This bike is in the same time very predictable and as a old Bonneville fan, I was expecting some true motorcycling fun and feeling plus the adrenaline expected Its true that every time your bike is parked there is a somebody to ask questions... and all the time you will tell, how you really enjoy her ride...

“I am really very happy with the Triumph Bonneville,...”

★★★★★

written by willrigged on 27/11/2007

I am really very happy with the Triumph Bonneville, having ridden scooters (Vespa T5) for the last 9 years, this bike is the perfect step up to a bigger bike, excellent ride comfort, I rode 200 miles on the first day, performance as others have mentioned is not superbike quality. Some class the new Bonnie as a sports tourer but I think it is more of a retro tourer.
If you like the look of it, buy it!

★★★★☆

written by Tom Schnapp on 27/11/2007

After not riding a motorcycle for thirty years, at age 66 I decided to "get back into it". I had last ridden a Triumph in 1976 and liked it so decided to try one again. My longest ride in one day is 675 miles with no adverse effects on these "middle aged" bones. To accomplish this, whenever I stopped for gas I would eat a light snack, drink water and do some stretching exercises. I could have rode longer but didn't want to wind up in an area without a motel.

Fast. 1960s retro look. Modern technology. Corners very well and has good central balance. I feel its very good value for money as most of the Triumphs are, a smooth quite ride with a faint whistle, sounds great. It's a winner style and attitude, as cool as the other side of a pillow
