“Great wine, terrible customer service”

★★☆☆☆

written by Janeylod on 10/01/2018

Until recently i would have given Sunday Times Wine 5 out of 5. I was very happy with their wines and their customer service. However, when it goes wrong, it goes badly wrong and their attempts at resolution fall far short of good with poor communication. I called customer services last November as I was having a large party for my birthday. I spoke to a helpful representative and upgraded my order, being careful to cancel the scheduled order as I wanted a different selection for my party and I was assured this had all been done . This was delivered in error, I was billed for it and then had a nightmare trying to arrange for the wine to be collected. I lost confidence in Sunday Times as a provider of fine wines when 3 failed collections resulted in the wine being left out in sub zero temperatures and I realised that some poor customer was going to receive it. When I informed customer services it was clear that this wasn't an issue and this just stuck in my head. I wouldn't want wine which had been left out in below freezing temperatures . So i cancelled my scheduled Christmas order. I was therefore furious that they sent and delivered wine i didn't request or order......without an invoice and are now chasing me with debt collection, trying to claim that I haven't paid a due bill. The wine was delivered Christmas weekend without an invoice and without paperwork so i am going to have to try and identify it as I wasn't in and it got put away by my other half.....we were having a party and he presumed I had ordered it .  Once again I contacted customer services to let them know all of the above. The only response I have had is confirmation that Yodel are coming out to collect the box....which I don't have and i don't know which wines to return. I have asked STW to cancel my wine club membership. So my advice is....brilliant company till it goes wrong. Although the brilliant company bit was a little spoiled with the returns in November which were left outside for 3 days. None of this should have happened and customer services have dealt with it in a way which made it considerably worse. I have even had messages stating they are trying to contact me or have left me messages.....None of which is true. Am feeling very let down and very frustrated with it all. Unfortunately I can't recommend them and am trying to cancel.....but it isn't easy!

“good wine dreadful delivery”

★★☆☆☆

written by Jovanny429 on 14/12/2017

Many good wines to choose from, however the delivery is very unreliable. Firstly, the carrier claimed to have delivered 2 cases of wine and left with a neighbour, it wasn't with ANY neighbour. Sunday Times Wine Club said they would sort it out. The following day only one case arrived therefore I refused this delivery. I phoned Sunday Times Wine Club again to complain but they were unhelpful. They stated it was a split delivery that was always going to arrive on 2 separate occasions. This was not explained before and took a conversation with a Club representative to clarify. I did get a phone call from a Wine Club supervisor who eventually sorted this out and gave me a £20 refund. It could have been a lot simpler and much less hassle for me; a shame really because the wines are very good.

“No notification and hard to cancel, keep away”

★★☆☆☆

written by 211Waugh on 07/06/2016

Offered a good discount to join, advised that I would receive email notification of upcoming proposals, giving me the right to accept or cancel. No notification was provided, when a call was received to upsell to me, I asked to cancel and was cut off. No option to cancel on the website, so have to go through a call centre. Friendly enough, just feel the difficulties they create to cancel do not reflect good business practice

“Black Stump”

Fine until you swallow it - then acidic aftertaste spoils it all. Not for me.

“christmas dinner left high and sadly ,very very dry.”

I am not a big customer, I do not spend fortunes on wine ,maybe ,if I had i would have been treated a lot better, still ,i am a customer and surely that is of some value,I ORDERED 23 BOTTLES FROM YOURE COMPANY.I was told they would be here for christmas, I called twicelast week to make sure and was reassured, although not greatly.my daughters pop band stuff arrived from australia after 5 days ,and my bourbon from masters of malt after 2 .I EVEN OFFERED TO PROVIDE A PRIVATE COURIER TO COLLECT THEM, BUT TO NO AVAIL.Is it because i live in IRELAND and we are not as important ,as our good dear friends in the UK.You took my money quick enough,a service is a service sir and needs to be of a certain standard, especially if it bears the name SUNDAY TIMES WINE CLUB.now Iam off to tesco's where a bottle in the hand is better than 2 cases in the bush. thank you sir. A DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER.

“Beware The Cold Call”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 16/04/2012

I received a "cold call" from The Sunday Times Wine Club and agreed to buy a case of wine at an apparently advantageous price. The young salesman was not the brightest, it must be said, not understanding the meaning of the word "robust", as my description of the type of red wine I like. When I clarified in simpler terms, he made a comment about people who like to "eat their red wine with a knife and fork", which I regard as a tactless and inappropriate remark. I only discovered, as I was about to make payment with my credit card, that I would in fact be signing up for a wine PLAN, this information having been kept quiet till then and not clearly explained even at that stage. Fortunately, I had not given him my card number or I, as an elderly woman who wished to buy a one-off case of wine for entertaining and to obviate carrying a load of heavy shopping, would have found myself considerably out of pocket at a later stage and bombarded with unwanted wine thereafter. If the wine is described as a special offer, therefore, take it as a warning that it means agreeing to join a special plan. Do be careful, everyone, of the tricks these wine clubs can play on the unwary. Maybe it is better to go to the supermarket after all. It is a pity The Sunday Times Wine Club has started these tactics, as actually I have bought a single case of wine from this company in the past with no hassle, it was delivered on time and was good quality. However, now I shall avoid all wine buying in this way.

“Four Seasons ..this is part of the Sunday Times wine...”

★★★☆☆

written by joeyruss on 08/11/2007

Four Seasons ..this is part of the Sunday Times wine club..

You may be tempted by their introductory three free bottles or even two cases for the price of one if you're lucky. The offers tend to change and much depends on where you see the advert.

The idea is that you receive a case (12 bottles) every month. You may choose from reds only, whites only or a mixed case. You will be notified a couple of weeks before delivery what to expect in the next case. You also get tasting notes and guide sheets to each wine which you can then file away in a ring binder which you receive free with the first case.

The cases are delivered automatically but you do have the option to cancel the next delivery or even withdraw from the scheme at any time. Be aware though .. unless you cancel, they WILL arrive each month and the amount will be debited from your account.

A word about the wines. You will be told that the wines come from small select, family run vineyards and are a world apart from the mass produced supermarket wines. This may be true but don't expect fabulous unusual wine. Cases are priced at around £65 which includes delivery. This is claimed to be a saving of 10% on rrp.
The cases will inevitably include "new world" wines from Chile. There's usually a few bottles of Australian Shiraz and Australian Chardonnay included also. Australian Shiraz is powerful stuff and certainly not to everyone's taste. Aussie Chardonnay may well be very popular among the masses but its not exactly brilliant wine. These are everyday wines and you can probably get them cheaper from your local supermarket where of course, you'll also be able to choose what you want, not accept what you're given ..!

Four Seasons is a good idea and saves you carrying wines home from the shops but in my opinion, you are paying a premium for them and you'll need to have a few family members or friends with different tastes to make them worthwhile and have a ready supply of wines to suit all tastes.
I've cancelled my subscription. Its not for me .....
