It Was An Amazing Concert Which Made Me Very Hopef

It was an amazing concert which made me very hopeful for the new album next year.

Set list was:

1. Intro (6:22) - This was just AC/DC's Long way to the top and The Ecstasy Of Gold. Good for creating atmosphere. 4/5

2. Creeping Death (6:30) - The concert started with this monster, nice and loud. 5/5

3. Fuel (4:11) - Fast and furious. As good as this song gets. 4/5

4. Wherever I May Roam (6:59) - Another great rendition of a classic. 5/5

5. For Whom The Bell Tolls (5:28) - Amazing. That's all I can say. Rob nailed the intro and great vocals from Hetfield. 5/5

6. Fade To Black (7:58) - The best rendition of this song I've heard this millennium. 5/5

7. Battery (5:38) - Played with tenacious speed and accuracy, Metallica show they still rock. 5/5

8. Master Of Puppets (9:00) - One of the highlights, great passion in the lyrics. 5/5

9. The Thing That Should Not Be (7:48) - A weaker song due to Hetfield's failure in the higher pitch vocals. Still good though. 4/5

10. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) (6:54) - I loved this rendition, James's voice was right for the melodic lyrics. 5/5

11. Disposable Heroes (9:08) - Metallica rarely play this live, and after hearing it I wondered why? Sounded spectacular live, close to 'One'. 5/5

12. Leper Messiah (6:50) - I gained new respect for this song. Solid. 4/5

13. Orion (9:38) - Best song of the night. Rob was spectacular, and the band rose for a great tribute to Cliff Burton. 5/5

14. Damage, Inc. (7:34) - Another great rendition. Finished the album in style. 5/5

15. Sad But True (5:36) - Bass was way up for this song, so couldn't hear Kirk. 4/5

16. Nothing Else Matters (6:03) - 3rd best rendition of this song. Amazing vocals from Hetfield. 5/5

17. One (8:55) - Another highlight. Brilliant as always. 5/5

18. Enter Sandman (10:13) - Not the best rendition from James, as his voice was tired and couldn't handle the higher notes. 5/5

19. Last Caress (2:09) - Metallica's cover sounds infinitely better than the Misfits, it's a joke. Good cover. 4/5

20. Seek & Destroy (8:36) - Great energy for this closing song. Rob backs vocals well. Very good rendition of a great song. 5/5

Overall, this was a stellar performance from Metallica, which shows them definitely moving back to their roots. Great concert!

Apart From The Song Line Up This Was A Truly Remar

Apart from the song line up this was a truly remarkable concert. I was skeptical to begin with, but appreciated Metallica's willingness to try new things. It paid off. The song list was:

1. The Ecstacy Of Gold (2:30) - The orchestra played the usual Metallica concert intro piece live which was significantly better than the tape version. 5/5

2. The Call Of Ktulu (9:34) - What can be said? This song was just so good. So much better than the original, rightly winning a grammy for best rock instrumental in 2000. 5/5

3. Master Of Puppets (8:54) - This song roared straight into it. Amazing. The symphony boosted the already incredible song, made evident in the middle instrumental part. 5/5

4. Of Wolf And Man (4:18) - The symphony added an eerie atmosphere to this song. It sounded great. 5/5

5. The Thing That Should Not Be (7:21) - As with all the songs, this was boosted significantly from the orchestra. Skipped the 2nd verse. 4/5

6. Fuel (4:35) - Infinitely improved from the orchestra with a nice car sounding intro. Good rendition. 4/5

7. The Memory Remains (4:41) - Actually listenable now. I can say that I enjoyed this version. 4/5

8. No Leaf Clover (5:43) - This was the highlight for me. When it started I had no idea what was going on and I realised "new song!". Was unbelievable live. The best song ever by Metallica. 5/5

9. Hero Of The Day (4:46) - Seemed so flat after No Leaf Clover, but still better than on Load. 4/5

10. Devil's Dance (5:26) - I was pissed off when they played ANOTHER ReLoad song, but sounded not bad. 4/5

11. Bleeding Me (9:01) - Another highlight. Close 2nd to No Leaf Clover. So much passion and emotion, supported beautifully by the symphony. Spectacular. 5/5

15 minute intermission.

12. Nothing Else Matters (6:47) - Good song to commence again with. The emotion and melody came to life. 5/5

13. Until It Sleeps (4:29) - Sounded much better than the original, but not up to the standards of the greats around it. 4/5

14. For Whom The Bell Tolls (4:52) - YES! This song rocked the theatre and was incredible. Was spectacular with the symphonic support. Another highlight. 5/5

15. -Human (4:19) - The 2nd new song, was solid but not as good as No Leaf Clover. Not bad though. 4/5

16. Wherever I May Roam (7:01) - Wow. This was amazing. Benefitted so much from the orchestra. 5/5

17. The Outlaw Torn (9:58) - Another song sounding vastly improved by the symphony. Some fat guy from the crowd did a stage dive and almost landed on me! Phew, close call. 5/5

18. Sad But True (5:46) - When James said "I'm gonna play something heavy now", I was expecting a Kill song, but was not disappointed with this one. Much better than the original. 5/5

19. One (7:53) - Words cannot express how good this was. Created incredible atmosphere. Best rendition ever! 5/5

20. Enter Sandman (7:39) - This one rocked the whole theatre out and we all got into it. Sounded so great with the symphony, great atmosphere. 5/5

21. Battery (7:24) - The long wait between songs was worth it. Spectacular intro and great ending. 5/5

It is impossible to describe the greatness of this concert. You truly had to be there, as it was a once in a lifetime experience. The atmosphere cannot be captured on cd or dvd, and so you guys will miss out. But the music can still be enjoyed. Best Metallica concert ever. 10/10

This Was An Excellent Concert Which Will Be Releas

This was an excellent concert which will be released as a live cd in few months. The songs were:

1. Blackened (6:38) - A great heavy tune to begin with. Sounded devastating live. 5/5

2. Sad But True (5:27) - They blasted straight into this tune and continued the quality. Great singing from James. 4/5

3. King Nothing (5:29) - This song sounded excellent live and was played perfectly. 5/5

4. The Thing That Should Not Be (6:37) - Not my favourite song but sounded better than the original. 4/5

5. Nothing Else Matters (6:28) - James put a lot of emotion into this song. Crowd sung a bit too. 5/5

6. And Justice For All (9:43) - The performance picked up in speed with this superb song. Great atmosphere. 4/5

7. Seek & Destroy (6:52) - Most underrated Metallica song. Sounds great live. 5/5

8. Battery (5:09) - Played with blistering speed from the old days and Metallica showed they still have it. 4/5

9. Bleeding Me (8:17) - This song was very powerful and moving live. Best rendition besides S&M. 5/5

10. St. Anger (7:21) - Not my favourite song, but sounded much better live. 3/5

11. Orion (5:01) - Was sounding so good and I wished they played the full version. 5/5

12. Fuel (4:30) - They were starting to sound tired by this song and it was played slower which actually sounded better. 4/5

13. Fade To Black (6:52) - The last song before the intermission and sounded spectacular. A highlight. 5/5

Fifteen minute intermission of clapping and cheering then they came back out.

14. Creeping Death (6:36) - Showed remarkable energy and played this song old school. Better than the original. 5/5

15. Master Of Puppets (8:37) - Sounded so spectacular. It was incredible. Another highlight. 5/5

16. Wherever I May Roam (6:44) - A slower and heavier pace and still sounded great. Good lyrics. 5/5

17. One (7:24) - Metallica played all their big songs early and it payed off. Quality song after song. 5/5

18. For Whom The Bell Tolls (4:52) - Was spectacular live creating amazing atmosphere. Crowd involvement was high and was the 2nd best song. 5/5

19. Enter Sandman (5:31) - Used some special effect for the "We're off to never-never land" and sounded 100x better than the original. Sounded creepy live. 5/5

20. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) (6:27) - Really created a great atmosphere live, I got lost in the words. 5/5

21. Hit The Lights (4:17) - From out of nowhere came this thrash song. The intro kept the audience guessing. 4/5

22. The Outlaw Torn (9:48) - This long ballad kept us in suspense the whole time. Great song, but not the best rendition. 4/5

23. Turn The Page (6:06) - Metallica were getting tired by this song, but still pulled through with a solid effort. 4/5

24. Harvester Of Sorrow (3:43) - Sounds spectacular live and was played fast. Not long enough! 5/5

25. The Unforgiven (6:27) - Good atmosphere created with emotional lyrics. Was amazing live. 5/5

26. No Leaf Clover (5:43) - The final song and the best. Used a tape of the orchestra for the intro. Crowd errupted in applaused when we knew what song it was. Just great. 5/5

After No Leaf Clover Metallica hung around to acknowledge and thank the crowd. They were tired and rightly so. This was the best Metallica concert imaginable. The best line up of songs with the best renditions of them, showing us that they still have it. 10/10

Thanks for your comment helendydunn. It was an amazing concert which I will always remember. I know that it will be released on live cd, but am not sure about the dvd format. The information I got was from Metallica.com and they never mentioned anything about a dvd of the concert. Fingers crossed they change their minds. The cd will be great though.

Helen of Troy

Good review of a great great band. My son got me listening to Metallica a few years ago although I had heard of them I had never really listened to them, thinking their music was far too heavy/noisy. How wrong I was! The Black Album is one of my favourite albums of all time, I have listened to it over and over, great for driving to. "Nothing Else Matters" is beyond excellent. I don't normally like or buy live cd's but for this one I may make an exception. Will it be released on DVD do you know?
