“In five months my Citroen Xsara Picasso spent 7 days...”

written by soon on 25/05/2006

In five months my Citroen Xsara Picasso spent 7 days in the garage for major faults. The handling is appalling, the trim is dire, the seats not fit for humans, the brakes are weak, it is like driving a Comma van of the 1970s. I have never been more disappointed in a vehicle. Why did I buy one then? I really do not know, I can only suggest that any prospective buyers should be aware that they are not buying a vehicle of quality, such as with the many Far Eastern marques. Do not look at the outside, look at the inside, and count the parts that seem unfinished. Sit in the drivers seat for an hour, take a test drive over bumpy roads, and listen for the rattles. The steering wheel is far too far from the driver, and is not adjustable for reach, the front seats are too hard and the rear too soft, the carpets and trim wear out almost before your eyes. Then the engine management system lets you down, and you are really in trouble. Do not just take my word for it, try entering "Citroen Picasso Faults" into a search engine and read some entries. I have sold mine, and I am very happy to take a loss and get rid of it.

They are great value, practical cars as recommended by most reviewers. You must have an issue here that we haven't been told about.

You must have a bad maintained model being a vehicle mechanic the 2.0 hdi engine is one of the best diesel engines available others may say different but thats there choice im on my second picasso now my first diesel had 267,000 miles on it and the only major fault was at 120,000 the head gasket went other than that i only had small normal runing faults the car was very good on fuel for its size and comfotable even with the 267,000 miles it still had plenty of power returned good mpg and the interior was still very clean the only bad points i found with the car was the a pillars restrict view at junctions and the performance was a bit slow but after fitting a intercooler this took power up to 110 bhp and after chipping the ecu the power went to around 135bhp myself and my family have been all over with the car and it never let us down ( apart from the head gasket ) the only reason we changed to another picasso was for a later car people may say french cars have poor built quality and are not reliable i would agree if we where talking about very early citroens like the ax and some models of the bx but the later cars have improved a great deal and another plus with the picasso is the body is galvenised so you have no rust problems ( unless its had poor accident repair or been very neglected ) yes if you push the car hard into bends the handling is not great but its not a sports car so dont expect the same degree of handling but if you want a very good family car which is good on fuel and reliable the picasso is very good in my opinion plus if you remove the rear seats you have a small van now we will probaly get other people who will disagree with a lot ive said but people are entitled to there opinion but i would recomend the picasso to anyone wanting a vehicle of this type after all it has been voted best mpv for quite a few years now thanks alex

“The first thing to go wrong was ten seconds after I...”

★★☆☆☆

written by falnsb on 24/05/2004

The first thing to go wrong was ten seconds after I got into my Citroen Xsara Picasso SX 2.0 HDi. I adjusted the internal rear view mirror and it fell off.

The controls are poorly thought out and inconsistently positioned and indicated. For example, the electric window controls for the two front window are on the centre console and have the more or less universal window symbol on them. Those for the rear windows are on the right hand side next to the headlamp beam levelling switch, and have a completely different symbol on them.

The instrumentation panel is offset to the left (RHD vehicle) and apart from the large digital speedometer, the other displays require eyes off the road for a couple of seconds. There is no variable brightness adjustment and they are too dim to read on a bright day.

It is unpleasant to drive above 40 mph with the windows open due to the loud wind noise (in my Audi I can do 80 and still hold a conversation).

The seats are hard and offer no proper support. I frequently drive 400 or 500 miles in day on the continent in my Audi and never feel any discomfort. In this Citroen, which I rented for a week, I was in pain after half an hour, with my legs and arms feeling numb and aching. My passengers also complained about the uncomfortable seats.

We returned the car three days early and were glad to see the back of it. It merely confirmed my already negative opinion of French cars.

You can't compare an Audi to a Cit Picc, doing 400 to 500 miles in a day - I've done over 400 in a day in my Picc and i had no problems - if you hire a car you won't be used to the seats so you will get fatigue - it's a fact

How can you relate to driving at 40 MPH and 80 MPH with the windows down to check conversation as a reflection on the car? - shut the windows and put the air con on!! - if you wan't to do 80 MPH with the windows down buy a convertible

Shoddy build quality ?? - find a similar mini mpv spec car for circa 10K o.t.r. with better build quality

How often do you need to control the rear electric windows from the front? so does it matter where the controls are ? - it's not too hard to find them

The dash illimination is adequate day or night - i suggest an eye test may be in order

It's got alot more to offer than space and view

Audi's are not in the same price league
the cheapest Audi is £13,700 o..t.r. for a 1.4 petrol A2

“The Citroen Xsara Picasso SX 2.0 HDi is a cheap car...”

The Citroen Xsara Picasso SX 2.0 HDi is a cheap car but very nasty buyer beware!!
Air Bag light kept coming on even after being to the dealer several times (service was appalling). Engine warning light kept coming on and reverse sensors failed to work properely. Again I felt like i'd been smacked across the face with a wet kipper by the lack of customer service and attitude of Citroen dealer. Currently engine seems to be dying even though it only 2 years old.
