My daughter had one of these Hotpoint WD640 and the One-shot thermostat failed having previously heat damaged some clothes. I investigated and replaced the one-shot and my analysis revealed that the hot air outlet vent at the top of the door opening is at an angle to the right. The door has a sloping portion that I assume is meant to deflect the warm air into the drum. However, since the sloping part is at the top of the door this causes the air opening to be partly obscured. This results in a restriction to the airflow and since the same amount of heat is input to the airstream the temperature of the air going into the drum is higher than it should be. The earlier model WD64 has the hot air outlet at the top of the drum and this has a good match. It appears to me that Indesit has used the same door as the WD64 in their WD640 model. They should have used a different door with the sloping part rotated to the right. I wrote to Indesit and they replied saying that the design was correct and that they had no records of failures.

Thank God it's finally packed up for good and can get another machine. Owned the WD640 for 3 years and pretty much from day one it has been nothing but grief. The filter is horrendous to empty, located at the back. Albeit does get quicker with experience. Without fail this machine would break down twice/thrice a year. Circuit boards have been replaced as have pumps, mostly when just out of warranty, so it could possibly be a new machine inside with the amount of parts that have been used to cobble it together. All these new parts and labour have been replaced by a Hotpoint 'Service' Engineer (Misnomer in its self) Things got so expensive, but not enough at time to scrap machine and buy another, I signed up for extended warranty. This offset the additional work cost, but what a sauce having to fork out for a machine that was relatively new and never overloaded or run incessentantly. If you are unlucky enough to own one of these take out every guarantee you can get. Take your clothes to the launderette cheaper and less aggro!

Had this machine for 6 years, no dryer after 1 year as 'circit board' blown, water leaking from soap dispenser, even though it is all cleaned out. Leaves marks on clothes, does not switch to rinse cycle. Worst machine I have ever had, would not recommend this to anyone!

my Hotpoint washer dryer had broken down in just the first month, and 3 more times after that. so much grief that this has given me in order to get it fixed. now, after nearly three years the manufacturer is charging me for repairs, even though it is under 5 years guarantee. would never recommend this product to anyone.

Lack of filter on front means having to turn machine on its side and remove bottom drain to clear blockages, at least 3 times/year. Also, drier safety cut-out blows on high temperature in air heater. I have dismantled my own machine and found ashes from burned fluff inside the air heater. There is no dust/fluff filter in air circuit which is a serious design flaw in my opinion. Replacing it with premium brand !

I have to say without a doubt this has to be the worst washing machine i have ever owned.
I have had it a grand total of 18 months and in that time i have had to call out the engineer 11 times and had a total of 8 new parts.
Faults ranged from filters being blocked (sounds simple enough until you find out where the filter is !) to water pouring out the drawer and flooding my kitchen twice, once after it had been "fixed"
The only advise i can offer is if you are going to buy this machine then make sure you take out the extra service cover, you are going to need it.

The most gut-wrenching issue for me with the whole Hotpoint ownership was the fact that my Mum bought it for my wife and I as a wedding present 4 years ago. From memory it had problems in its first year which lead to me buying extended warranties in all subsequent years. I would never normally buy extended warranties and this is the only product I have ever bought where I have bought one. If you don't have one buy one quick or keep your figures crossed hard! The faults which occurred covered just about everything I think the most irritating being the dryer has completely failed several times ( a right pain when you have a young child). It has also gone down with various faults, circuit board failures, very noisy, water coming out through the tray. In 4 years of ownership I believe it has been repaired in the region of a dozen times. I would never normally have stuck it out for this long but I felt I owed it to my Mum as it was a present. I would have absolutely no hesitation in saying to anyone do not touch this product with the proverbal bargepole.

Had this machine nearly 3 1/2 years and had repair engineer out at least 3 times a year every year so far. have extended insurance which has been a godsend as i just couldnt afford to have it repaired as often as it has been. constant problems with dryer unit failing, engineer told me last time it couldnt be replaced again as they dont make the part anymore. Had to call them again today, was making loud metallic noises and smelling of electrical burning - great christmas eve in waiting for the repair engineer to call again!

Very poor customer service. Started throwing up water, customer service told us it was our fault due to washing at 30 degrees! managed to get them to fix it under warranty eventually - service man cleaned filter which solved it just long enough for the warranty to expire.private repair guy said pump broken and should have been replaced when fixed previously. will never buy hotpoint again.

I am a single person so I just use my washing machine once or twice per week. However, my Hotpoint WD640 has needed two major repairs in two years. The first one took place just three months after I bought and the second one, less than two years later. On both accasions the whole circuit board had to be changed,. It is a very difficult machine to fix so your local washing machine service won't be able to do the job, Therefore, you have to contact Hotpoint if you have any trouble with the machine. This can be quite expensive! My sister bought exactly the same machine almost at the same time as I did. She has experienced lots of problems with it as well.

I bought this Hotpoint WD640 washing machine and found I had to endure 7 engineers visits in its first 8 weeks! New door latch x 2, new door, new pump x 2, new door seal, new condenser unit, new dryer fan and element and finally a new motor!
The noise, the constant calling Hotpoint and taking time off work, the engineers who apologised and repaired it knowing they would be back, the hours and hours of waiting for washing to dry, the dreadful rinse cycle - towels needed another 3 rinse and spin cycles to rinse properly - this on half the usual amount of wash powder!
I kept the awful thing for 16months, after another 13visits and parts I junked it! £469 for 16months! I would never ever buy a Hotpoint product again.

Bought this machine in Feb 2006, and since then it has been repaired a few times, with basically similar faults everytime, blown modules, water leaking, dryer not working. Its just gone wrong again, but this time is going to its maker in the sky (not bad for a machine with 2 and half years service, sorry 1 and a half years service as nearly a year has been wasted waiting for it to be repaired, no kidding!). Even though we have an extended warranty, we just can't be bothered any more. No-one will take responsibility, no-one cares once they have your money, 17 breakdowns in 2 years and they still won't replace the machine. In the last 2 and a half years I've taken time off waiting for the engineer's to turn up, or not bother to turn up depending how they have felt. Nothing is worth this much trouble, and I've now gone and bought another make.

strongly advise anyone thinking of purchasing this Hotpoint WD640 to think again. Only had it 2 months when it 1st broke down, and it has broken down 5 times since. Machine is 15 months old now so we've decided to cut our losses and get a reliable brand.

I have had to call out an engineer 7 times in 2 years because the dryer had packed up. They have replaced the offending part on every occassion!! I have this morning called Hotpoint again because the dryer has packed-up and they now have a new policy of charging £89 call out up-front and if it is the same offending part then they will refund the money! What a nerve! I will be calling customer services on Monday and will start my campaign to make them replace this substandard machine and not with another WD640!

I bought this machine 11 months ago. Within a few weeks it had gone wrong, the machine is terrible. We have lost clothes, had clothes ripped, colours run due to dodgy thermostat boiling the water. Nightmare.
The auto dry is poor and even the Hotpoint engineer admitted it not a good feature.
Told by Hotpoint that the built in filter clogs up with dust then backwashes dye into machine. We have had loads of clothes stained, even when washed on their own.
After 11 or 12 call outs I demanded a new machine and eventually they agreed. I now awaiting my new WD860, hopefully a better model than this!

We bought a WD640 in July last year and the thermostat failed in November. An engineer came and fixed it only to return again in February for another breakdown. Fixed again and then failed again in June and again at the beginning of August. Because it was just over a year old we had a hell of a job to get Hotpoint to agree to a replacement, but eventually they agreed. The replacement model came 2 weeks ago and would you believe it, this afternoon it's happened again!! I'm not even going to bother to get onto Hotpoint, I'm just going to go and buy a better machine tomorrow.
Do not recommend buying this product, it will cause you more hassle than it's worth.

Avoid at all costs its disgusting with so many problems Hotpoint are cashing in on my misery.
I think having only owned this for a year we will be getting rid thats £400 down the drain :0(
Can anyone recommend a good quality washer dryer please or would we be better just getting separates? Room is a problem though so i would prefer a combined, help anyone

Take my advice this Hotpoint WD640 is a product to body swerve. I am a service engineer in a different field, and the fault with this machine is in the Module(believe me I have experience). Which they have not been able to eradicate, you will struggle to get the service people to deal with your problem and the engineer simply wants to replace the module and get out the door before it breaks down again. which is anything between 1 day & a week. The great thing for us was that it was bought through Great Universal and after 3 breakdowns they were asking for it to be uplifted as we did not have any faith with this product, despite this the Hotpoint service department kept us hanging on for another 2 occassions until Great Univeral stepped in and said enough is enough and forced them to uplift this useless washer/dryer. Please do yourseleves a favour, pick another make all together.
A once loyal customer of Hotpoint.

This Hotpoint WD640 model is awful. Don't bother with it. It will be broken more often than usable.
Hotpoint customer services are not at all flexible and they just don't care.

The Hotpoint WD640 itself isn't too bad but not great either. I don't know if the problems I have had with this model are common or if I've just been unlucky but the after sales service from Hotpoint is terrible and I will never buy another product from them. I've cancelled my extended 3 year guarantee as once the free 12 months is up I feel I'm better off cutting my losses and putting that £130 towards a new machine. Based on my own experience I would not reccomend this model or Hotpoint to anyone, however for someone who is at home during the day it would probably be less of an inconvenience to waste a few afternoons in return for a cheaper machine. Anyone who has a full time job should stay clear of Hotpoint - it becomes a ful time job to look after the appliance!

I meant to also add that since the start this machine has never properly washed the clothes or dried them. We constantly had powder staining and had to rewash we also constantly had warm wet clothes which never seemed to dry regardless of how long they were on for.
<br/>I simply cannot believe Hotpoint can continue making and selling this machine with so many problems
