★★★☆☆

written by glenc on 24/09/2009

I must say the Nintendo Wii was a great idea when it came out - a sort of games console for the non-games market. I had mainly sports games on it and found it thoroughly enjoyable. Unlike other games consoles I've had (ps2, megadrive etc) I dont think Ive ever played it on my own - its a very socialable games consoles and I only used to get it out when friends came round.

That's the good stuff.

The bad points are that it doesnt work that well any more! The handsets dont connect very well, it sometimes restarts itself for no reason and sometimes doesnt come on at all. I've still given it 3 stars as its a cracking console, but its a shame that it breaks so easy - and outside of warantee, which is always annoying!

Overall my kids like the Wii although my eldest seems to keep going back to his Xbox. Easy to use, small, connects wifi easily, games limited especially for older teenagers, mine are 14/16 both get quite bored after a while.
If the PS3 was cheaper would have one of those instead, not recommended unless you have younger children, DS users will like.

“At a time when sales of LCD and Plasma screens are...”

★★★☆☆

written by wlmcdonough on 27/01/2007

At a time when sales of LCD and Plasma screens are huge why has Nintendo dropped out of the race? Having looked up the specs on the web it seems that the old XBox has higher specs all round (memory, CPU and graphics) and the difference between the Wii and the Gamecube isn't staggering. The controllers however are inventive and fun, allowing anyone to play, even those who aren't traditional video games fans. The price is low and makes this an ideal second games machine. Get a few mates round after a some beers and the Wii is a big hit, although wasted on a 42" HD plasma. Can't help but feel that a new range of Gamecube controllers could have achieved something close to the Wii. I hear the PS3 has motion sensor controls, it will be interesting to see how the games will make use of this. How long unitl Wii like PS3 controllers are released onto the market via 3rd party vendors. Hopefully Nintendo's next offering will be a huge leap.

I agree. Great with a few mates after a few bevvy's. It feels a bit daft playing on your own!! the Nintendo Wii is good fun though.

Thanks wlmcdonough you do have some fair points. But the one about the batteries in the wiimote can be resolved. Buy a unigross 1hour charger and pop some 2300 or 2500mah batteries in it, they will give you about 5-10 hours play time depending on usage. And who says black and white games are not fun? nintendo's wii shop allows you to download and play your favourite past Nintendo games ,from the old consoles; such as super mario 64 and the old zeldas. Furthermore, you can pick up all the old gamecube games as the wii will play them. Microsoft and Sony can't compete with the brilliant nintendo heros: mario, luigi, yoshi, samus, Link, etc.

I also have a 360 but am thinking about getting a PS3, some say that the PS3's detail isn't as good as the 360's. But you really need a HDTV for these two consoles and not for the wii. HDTVs are really expensive and some people cannot afford them right now, so thats why Nintendo made the wii for a standard TV not a HDTV.

I’ll explain the 4 out of 10. I have a DreamCast and still play it, along with an old Xbox and GameCube. The difference between the graphics on the DreamCast and Wii should be huge, they aren’t. It is actually a lower spec than an old XBox and probably an old Playstation (and how much can you pick them up for?). Just take a look at the memory, CPU and graphics (you'll have to dig around because Nintendo wouldn't release them), having invested in a HD TV I'm just bemused that Nintendo decided not to support it. OK so the game quality and unique play still makes it a gem, but would you be happy playing your games in black & white (I have one of the TVs in the loft somewhere), I'd guess not. Just 720p and I'd have been happy. Remove the control pads with the point at the screen wizardry and you almost have a GameCube (again how much are these today?). I haven't got a Playstation3 yet, but saw a demo of a game playing on one in Dixons, blown away. Come end of Jan and with a bit of luck I'll get one. You can't compare the Wii with a 360 or a PS3. And then there are the batteries, come on all of us are raiding our remotes to power the controllers?!?! Even though I have a charger and some top rechargeable batteries. Why oh why did they not put decent batteries in them and let them charge from the console?? I know you can buy an add-on, another expense... Don't get me wrong, get a bunch of drunken Alpha males together on a Friday after a drink plus curry and it's great, but it could have been magnificent.

Why have you given the wii 4/10 for value for money? Compared to the 360 and PS3 it is cheap. £180 for the whole package and a game and what the PS3 is £420 alone and the Xbox isn't far of that.

Great console in theory - Great fun and great idea - not so good if you're wanting an actual proper game of something though - good for kids parties.

I love the idea behind this, but when playing I found myself drawn towards my Xbox 360 instead due to the lack of power from the wii. I think it's just like all other Nintendos in that they are better for small children rathers than older gamers. I do respect its price and the idea but again it's better for the younger gamers.
