Cheap, Economical, Reliable
Bought a 1994 Peugeot 106 1.5d Graduate Edition for £450. I was a full-time carer for a relative at the time, so I needed something cheap, since carer's allowance was £55.55 a week.
I got lucky and found one with just 69k and mint interior/exterior. Only one previous owner, looks like it had been garaged between it's trips into town.
Initially bit hard to start on cold mornings, like a lot of old diesels. New Bosch glowplugs and some add-to-the-tank cleaner fixed that.
Fantastic economy, my partner and I weigh over 40 stone (560lbs) together and I still got 45mpg round town, 60 on a run.
When alone and the car isn't loaded, it did more like 50-55mpg round town and 70mpg on a run.
It's not even close to being nippy, even if you try and thrash it, but then that's not what it was made for. It will cruise at 70 comfortably and has surprisngly little noise in the cabin at that speed.
Insurance and tax are both cheap.
If you just need a car that's very economical to get you from A-to-B for a while, you can't go far wrong with one of these.

I Have Just Bought A 2001 Y Reg Peugeot 106 1.5 Di
I have just bought a 2001 Y Reg Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel as was trying to reduce costs.......... had a Fiat Punto Sporting previously rubbish on fuel and cost a fortune in parts. Fuel Economy Brilliant 55mpg. Bad points are noisy in air turbulence on motorway.
Steering although has PAS is pretty heavy.
Needs more regular servicing every 6k on diesel model.

For No Frills Motoring On A Budget This Is One Of
For no frills motoring on a budget this is one of the better cars around. Starting to look very dated compared to the competition and does not hold it's value as well as the Citroen Saxo (which is the same car).

This Car Has Only One Thing Going For It, Its Chea
This car has only one thing going for it, its cheap! On the bad side, its noisy as hell, its slow and it is very uncomfortable. The build quality is non existent and I would not like to be involved in an accident in one. In conclusion, I'm sticking to my Volvo!

If Your A Student Looking For A Cheap Car To Run,
If your a student looking for a cheap car to run, then this is the one for you. Avoid the cheaper end of the spectrum. Ensure it has been regularly serviced every 6000 miles. Mine does not have power steering or electric windows, but this has never bothered me. I have had it near on 3 years and have done over 20,000 miles. It has covered 82,000 miles, and is 11 years old. It has never failed to start, even when the battery died I bumped it and away I went! Maintenance is about £300-400 a year (although mine is at the stage in life where the usable items are needing to be replaced, e.g new discs and pads all round, new cambelt, rad, battery, tyres, ball joints, water pump, exhaust downsection).
Parts are cheap and plentiful. I get 400+ miles on three quarters of a tank. I have used it for camping expeditions which required loading it to bursting point, no problems! Engine is bulletproof and fully expect mine to easily break the 200,000 mile mark!

Bought An Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel Xrd For Travellin
Bought an Peugeot 106 1.5 Diesel XRD for travelling to work. After finally filling it up for the second time after weeks, I have worked out it's done 64mpg. The distance to work is 20 miles, not all straight roads mind. It is used for nipping into town and running around over the few weeks it took to use a tankful, so I am well pleased with that. It should do at least 70mpg on a good long run. Equipment in it is good, just that bit more than you would ordinarily need. Fairly quiet too, not noticeably diesel when warm, and power steering is good.
