Jad Boyu External Canister Filter Review

This is a review for the mini external cannister filter which is sold under the names "BOYU" and "JAD" among others. Mine is the JAD EF-05.



This is a small external filter for smaller aquariums, with a flow rate of 150 l/hr.



I bought this filter to go with my 30 litre setup as it has a vastly greater filter media volume than equivalent "hang-on-back" (HOB) or small internal filters, and water quality is very important. I believe that the massive filter volume makes up for the low-ish flow rate. The cannister is split into two sections and I am using one for mechanical and one for biological filter media.



Good points: Fairly quiet, good volume, price



Bad points: This is not the most user friendly filter. The tubes are too stiff (I have replaced them with some more flexible tubes), the hose barbs could be more secure and the attachments could be better made. Build quality could be improved all-round.



Summary: It does it's job well, it just feels a little cheap and the "hang on" design is a bit weird. If you want an external filter for a small tank it's about the only option, there are some larger HOB filters you might consider.
