Good Points
amazing looks, amazing speed and basically just an amazing car!

Bad Points
absolutely none at all

General Comments
these Renault 5 gt turbo cars are tops. Compared to any other hot hatch this is the king. No other car, including peugeot, citroen or other renaults, comes close to it.

Actually I have to totally disagree with all that....I own a VW Mk3 16valve Golf gti which completely annihilates a Renault 5 gt turbo in terms of top speed, 134mph, (only 0.6 of a second slower on 0-60) power, 150bhp, looks, it's black and sexy, features, electric everything, air con, etc - say no more.

Renault GTT rules.I have a 180Bhp turbo PROPERLY tuned and it blows everything i have raced.A CRX has only got a 1.6 engine anyway and a golf is a underpowered tank. You put a GTT against those cars with both of equal power and the GTT will blow them everytime. At the end of the day you need to look after the engine as with any other car.But for performane per buck spent you cant beat it.Especially my GTT!So ill be seeing you in my rear view mirror! And i have already raced a 190Bhp CRX and embarrased the bloke driving it.

The R5 GTT is the most outstanding hot hatch. My mate owns one and when he offered me the chance to drive it I jumped in. It was like a dream, quick and nimble. This is the ultimate hot hatch!

Well mabey golf gti,s do kick its bum at top end :), but can I tell you all that 0.6 sec slower at 0-60 is a big difference. I drive a pug gti6 170Bhp, have recently raced a standard R5 and not much in the acceleration something like 0.1 seconds. Although I took him with ease though once we both reached about 70. the R5 topped out at about 120+, and i've had the pug (while racing the R5 on a airfield) red lining off the clock which reads 140mph which indicates 145+ which is pretty respectable. I know there a bit steap on the cash but im tellin you there a great little car. You can't dissagree the R5 gtt is one of the best cars you can buy for its money, couple of grand difference and it matches my acceleration, cant go wrong. rather have a r5 then a golf, well mabey the 4- motion. ;)

I've got a 5 and it's pushing out 185bhp thats only running 12psi of boost i've had 220bhp running 26psi no golf or rex has got anything on me. As for top end who races at 145 mph anyway? As for handling i've got no problem coz it's been dropped 60mm. If you look in some car mags the 5 is quoted as being the guater mile king. They do go bang every so often but what do you expect i dont mind a rebuild once in a while my car still ends up cheaper in the long run than a mk3 golf or an integra. And it's faster!!

I now have replaced my CRX with an Integra Type R.

Which has been named several times, 'the best handling and best sounding front drive car in existancy' (Top gear)

I happen to agree!

But please ladies, lets stop bickering about our cars?
Each to his own, I say.

I currently own a R5 and like the other guys, i do agree that u have to be a True enthusiast. U cant go buying this car to thrash it about every where. It needs respect and a love for it. The whole point of this car is that It has a lot of character from every angle u look at it from. This car is not meant to be the most comfortable car around if u want that then buy a volvo 440 turbo. This car is built around it crazy 1.4 turbo lump which is so stupid you either love it or hate it. All cars have their good and bad points it all depends what important to u. this car should be sold to ENTHUSIASTS ONLY.

Hi

I'm from South Africa. I'm reading people's comments on Renaualt GT 5Turbo. I drive the opposition - Uno Turbo. I agree with you guys when you say "Renault G T Turbo is for the "REAL"car enthusiats". These little cars are quick and very underrated too. They will out-perform the so-called "HOT-HATCHES" the likes of Golf, Vtech (SLOW DONKEY...!!) I've seen these Renaults kick bottom. So you Golf Drivers, Honda Vtech Drivers, CATCH a wake up - Renault GT Turbo WILL STILL KICK your Japanese donkey butt to hell and back. Besides this, these "HOT-HATCHES" lack character, sex appeal and inspiration...!!That is a fact. My girlfriend drove in a V-Tech, then she got into my Uno Turbo... SINCE THEN SHE IS ADDICTED TO THE CAR. So don't come speak to us about leather interior, air condition and all that. If you want all that old man stuff, then buy a Volvo. If you want a real rush, excitement and adrenaline - buy a Renault G T 5 Turbo. ONG LIVE RENAULT TURBO. This is for all the Turbo Addicts.

I've had my 5 gtt for nearly 3 year's, and all I've had to change is the brakes, and oil etc, look after it and it will look after you, as for the guy with the golf 16v, hehe, sure you ain't been racing replicas, I raced a golf 16v today, big wheels very nice looked like he had spent a few quid on it, ok I'll be honest, I did not beat him by that much, but I still beat him, and I'm only running about 140 bhp. It all boils down to people spending thousands of pounds for so-called fast cars, and when they run up with this little cult classic at the traffic lights, they end up wondering whether to sell their overpriced, slow car. chow

What are you on about man! R5T's are garbage. Granted they're quick but that comes at the cost of total unreliability. Head Gaskets go all the time and they're built out of baked bean tins. My mate had one and it cost him £400 to have a clutch fitted and that wasn't even at a main dealer. All 5 Turbo's have carbs fitted which makes them unreliable and difficult to set up. If you want a real hot hatch get rid of that carb powered tin can and get something with fuel injection and a turbo - like a Punto GT or a Nissan 200 SX.

actually i can't understand why anybody likes these things. I had one a few years back and all it gave me was grief. Head gaskets cant hold the boost, head warps like a piece of baton, rattles like a kiddies toybox etc etc.
The only saving grace is that the car is pretty quick but those who say these things are cheap should check out the price of an S13 200sx - because these are far cheaper cars and much underrated, faster, more powerful, better looking and the same insurance group. After owning one of each i know which one i prefer!

For the guys who slate the Renault 5 Turbo they are missing the point and dont know what they are talking about. The Golf GTI and Honda Civic are far superior cars there is no doubt but they cost much more money. The R5GTT, if you find a good example, offers amazing performance for such a cheap motor. The scope for modifying the engine is huge, the Renault I owned had a Turbo Technics Turbo and combined with other mods saw the 0-60 time drop to 6.5 seconds and the top speed go to over 130. The fact is no other car in its price range comes near it.

I think that GT turbos are superb little cars, a lot quicker than today's so called "hot" hatches and has a million times more character than golfs, fords and hondas. Amazing acceleration, good handling and easy to tune. People who want aircon and leather seats should go and buy a volvo and leave these cars to true car enthusiasts. The only reason GTT get labelled unreliable is because most of the people who own them don't know how to look after a car. Any 10+ year old car that gets thrashed within an inch of its life and gets no attention is bound to end up knackered.

I totally agree with this review although I dont drive one.. I drive a 1.4 16v corsa sport but I drove an R5GTT a while ago and I was blown away... french cars are supposed to be tinny and generelly a bit poor but i loved this car.. it was lowered but that was all that was done to it and when you came off a roundabout (fast!!) and floored it you were stuck to the back of the seat - immense!!

Couldn't disagree with you more on that review. This car's only saving grace IS the turbo that's bolted onto that pathetic 1.4 8-valve engine. I know Renault 5 have many bad points without driving one, but from hearing from the owners.

Poor build quality and a Temperamental engine which overheats are two well known facts!

I'm gonna stick with my 91 Vtec CRX that still remains THE DADDY of the hot hatches.

160 bhp , 0-62mph in 7.0 and 145mph top whack... and that's completely STOCK too! See you in my rear view mirror!
