Salinate's review of Harvey Water Softeners

“I've had my Harvey's block salt softener since having...”

★★★★☆

written by Salinate on 02/12/2010

I've had my Harvey's block salt softener since having a new bathroom fitted three months ago. Although it was a difficult installation, it was carried out very professionally. Our water supply is now beautifully soft and lime scale free.

Now to the one and only bad point. The salesman implied that salt replenishment for my family of four would be about once a month. The installer said that every three weeks would be more realistic. In use it consumes the two blocks in just two weeks (£115 p.a. if bought in bulk). A phone call brought an engineer out very quickly and he partly dismantled the machine and declared it to be in order.

Our water consumption is far lower than average. For example, we had the kitchen cold tap left on the hard supply, the washing machine is a modern Miele low water consumption model, both toilets are dual flush and the shower has an air injection economiser fitted. Four short showers are taken per day and the bath is used once a week or less between the four of us.

In summary I am satisfied with this softener and glad that I bought it, but I wish they had been more up front about it's running cost as there is no way that it will pay for itself as claimed. Goodness knows how the reviewer who gets up to seven weeks for a family of four does it. I estimate that if our kitchen tap was on soft as recommended and we took baths, we would get a week or less per replenishment, costing over £230 p.a.

Harvey Water Softeners's Response to Salinate's Review

Dear Sir/Madam,

Sorry to hear you were unhappy with the salt consumption, this can be quite dependent on your incoming supply hardness. If you are still unhappy, please contact our service department and we will see what we can do for you.

Overall, the savings based on consumables and capital depreciation of appliances etc do mean that the softener will pay for itself even in very hard water areas where more salt is needed (without softening, in these areas even greater quantities of consumables are required).

I hope you will get in touch with us.
