“Right, some of this might sound a little contradictory...”

Right, some of this might sound a little contradictory to what I have marked so bear with me.

I returned from holiday to find out I had been invited to a charity dinner. One problem - I discovered this on the Tuesday and the dinner was on the Friday. OK, so having got over the initial blind panic of wondering where the hell I was going to hire an evening suit at such short notice, I called my local Debenhams store who said there shouldn't be any problem but, if they couldn't get a suit to fit me in time for Friday, they weren't liable due to the 3 days notice (and not the 3 weeks they normally ask for) I'd given them which I thought was fair enough.

So, having been measured on the Wednesday, I picked up the suit on the Friday. Got it home - shirt, fantastic; nice little dicky bow; jacket, perfect; pants, were not the 36" I was measured for!! I couldn't even zip them up, despite the checklist being ticked that the pants were a 36 long leg. Indeed, I think whoever packed them read the 3 as a 2 because the last time I was able to get into pants that small I was still at junior school (I'm now 37!!). Thankfully, I had my own black pants to bail me out of a potentially awkward situation and these blended OK with the attire that did fit.

Took the suit back and was told that I should have been asked to try it on before taking it away - which I wasn't. The girl who I spoke to did not have the authorisation to offer me a refund at the time so, having called them back, I have been offered a 50% refund which I'm happy with.

Clearly, if you use Debenhams to hire a suit then you need to give them the 3 weeks notice to ensure the company who organise the suits (it sounds like they do it through a third party or arrange through a sole Debenhams location merely specialising in supplying their stores with such attire) send the right clobber! Also ensure that you try the suit before leaving the store and taking it home.

This might sound like a bad experience but to be fair to the Debenhams staff they were helpful in sorting me out at such short notice and also with the refunding of my money.

I would use them again but just make sure you leave plenty of time for errors like ill-fitting pants to be rectified!!
