“I started riding at Glen Jakes in late 2004 after...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Neeshie on 10/04/2010

I started riding at Glen Jakes in late 2004 after being dissapointed with a previous riding school. I have to say that for my riding time there I did enjoy it, I learnt how to ride within a few months and was able to volunteer there early the following year. The riding instructors I had (I don't think alot of them are there anymore) were very good - they knew what they were doing and they pushed me into doing things I wasn't very confident in doing. This wasn't a bad thing however as it gave a nervous rider the push she needed. There was one particular instructor named Sharon who was awful, very rude and not someone I would hire in my business that works with children. On one occasion when I wasn't ready to canter she kicked the horse right in the stomach forcing it to bolt off on me and for me to fall off. Many complaints were made regarding the way she taught and treated clients and I am suprised in my 3 years being there she was not fired.

It cost me £25 per Stable Management course which helps you learn how to look after horses. This worked and was fun as I made new friends via this however the price is extortionate concidering what they teach you which is readily available in books. What I thought was disgusting was the favouritism in the groups which meant some proceeded to higher levels when they hadn't passed a specific section just as I did or didn't therefore costing me more money to try and gain a level. Once you passed Level 3, which for me being an average learner who I believe picked it up fast you are looking at around 10-12 sessions which is over £200. I find this so stomach turning to have paid that amount of money. Plus you had to pass Level 3 to help out there. This is effective so you don't get unskilled volunteers however the price was unfortunate.

Once being a volunteer at Glen Jakes and making a friend we both started to experience favouritism and biased work sorting. This was if there were able volunteers to complete a job whilst we were already working, we were the ones that had to do the job. This was usually a leading job which is seen as the more tedious jobs however the job giving was really unfair. Volunteers on a saturday work 9am to 6pm and receive two 30 minute breaks. This really displeased my family as girls/boys as young as 11 worked this long for a small break and a "free ride" as a reward.

Overall I would not recommend Glen Jakes to anoyone who is thinking of learning to ride or switching riding schools. Although I did have fun experiences there, I do not believe that it is the best run business with hired staff which are rude and volunteering staff that I have experienced as rude. Therefore I believe you should look somewhere else. Thank you for reading.
