Loopyloo99's review of Island Cruises, Island Escape

“Hi - We have cancelled our cruise on the Island Escape...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Loopyloo99 on 06/03/2010

Hi - We have cancelled our cruise on the Island Escape for July 2010, due to the many negative reviews posted on several cruise review websites. I have noted that most of the good reviews for the Island Escape mention that it is 'good value for money' - but I wonder if would you still be happy with it if you had paid £1500 a week (the price Thomsons were charging us)for two people in an inside cabin in July? It is clear from all of the reviews (good and bad), that the ship is in dire need of a complete refurbishment. In addition to this, there have been several recent Noro Virus outbreaks and there are clearly sanitation and plumbing issues with the ship, which can be proven by the photographs travellers have posted on the internet.

I think that if you can get a cheap/special deal or last minute offer on this ship, it may be (just about) bearable... If you are brave enough to book a cruise on it, there are deals on the internet for around £399 for a week to go on this ship. I would strongly advise potential Island Escape cruisers NOT TO PAY FULL THOMSON'S PRICES TO CRUISE ON THIS SHIP - Don't let Thomson's rip you off! They are charging top prices for a sub-standard ship.

Palmeyra's Response to Loopyloo99's Review

Believe me you have done the right thing! We have been on over twenty cruises, and NEVER before have we complained about anything, but this ship was really way below standard. Some people say it is spotlessly clean. . . Well, either they have bad eyesight or their standards of cleanliness are strange. Our duvet was absolutly filthy, even the covers were grey. the pillows smelled of human sweat. We got a very cheap deal from our home port (Tenerife) so at first we were pleased, but believe me, we were looking forward to coming home. the food in the paying restaurant is as cruise food should be . . but we were only able to book once as it was full throughout our cruise. In the buffet it was edible, but not a pleasure. Go a little more upmarket like Royal Caribbean, or even Costa . . . and have a great time. Thank your lucky stars you read the reviews, and believed them! Valerie martin arvelo.

Refined Retiree's Response to Loopyloo99's Review

We have just spent a week on the Island Escape, paid around £560 each full board and cannot believe some of the negative reviews on here! The ship is a bit shabby in places, but certainly not dirty and I can assure you I am not easily pleased when it comes to cleanliness. The food in the restaurant on Deck 6 was excellent, as good as in any decent restaurant, with a wide choice and as much as you wanted. I did not particularly like the 24 hour Beachcomber restaurant as it reminded me of a works canteen, so we only ate there when leaving on an early morning excursion before the Deck 6 restaurant opened. The clientele were mixed, some people you would not want to mix with in every day life, but we just avoided them. It is a shame you have cancelled your cruise, but I agree it is silly to pay full price when there are internet deals to be had cheaper. We read the reviews before we went and were also unsure of what we had let ourselves in for, but we had booked so took it as it came and it was certainly nowhere near as bad as some people made out.
