I bought the Vauxhall Frontera Sport 2.0i as an introduction to 4x4 owndership. And I'm glad I did. For a highly competative, cheap price, I got a real 4x4 and not a Suzuki/Diahatsui toy. I found the car comfortable to drive, very good on interior space and not a financial burden to own. The well proven Vauxhall 20i engine has been highly reliable, provided sufficient power, and with the recent snow, it's been a Godsend. The boot space isn't fantastic as its very small. Its like this has been sacrificed to give excellent rear legroom, but hey, we can live with this.
It has a neat, SWB, well-built body and certainly isn't a lightweight in the Countryside. It's not great on acceleration, but then it isn't meant to be. It returns about 28-32 MPG and gives great handling on regular journeys.
I would recommend this car as an excellent alternative to a 1.8 Land Rover Freelander - which seems to suffer a terrible fate where gaskets are concerned. So if you want good, honest reliable 4x4 ownership, but without paying through the nose for it, then the Vauxhall Frontera Sport is for you.
