alimax's review of Dell Inspiron 15

“I bought this laptop in March 2009 as a replacement...”

★★★★☆

written by alimax on 14/11/2009

I bought this laptop in March 2009 as a replacement for my Inspiron 1501. I'll talk you through the basic features.

Overall Appearence:

When you take it out of the box it looks stunning. However that glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet, and with no included cloth to wipe those marks away, cleaning it becomes an event. Other than that the design is clean and tidy and attractive.

Screen and Lid:

The Screen is great. At a widescreen 1366x768 it really is pretty good, and clear as well. Also very thin, but despite this very rigid.

Keyboard:

Nice. As good as any other dell. Nice array of Function Keys.

Mouse:

The mouse is an interesting subject. Many other users comment on how odd it is, and it is indeed different. With no defining edge between it and the palmrests, using it can be odd. Early on in its usage, the mouse can suddenly freeze for a couple of seconds. However this disappears over time. And you get used to the no-edge thing.

Ports:

3 USB's, video out, and ethernet in. Thats it. As well as a very good CD drive. It has a narrow slot for something one side (no idea what for), and a memory card at the front, by the line in and out. When using headphones, it is clean and very noise free.

Memory:

Dell make a big deal out of the 250GB hard drive but it is nearer 230. But oh well, I managed to fit all of my media: 6 years of digital photos, music (of which I have A LOT) and videos on it with ease. RAM is good and pretty fast as well. Although not amazingly quick.

Battery:

Its average. At full screen brightness, with internet on, and average usage, It manages 90 mins if your lucky. It will get up to about 3 hours if you tweak like mad.

Overall:

Good budget media laptop. Attractive, and nice to use. No problems laptop hinges, CD tray, or keyboard at all.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW:

-You will get used to the mouse

-The power adaptor is great, right up until the day when it inexplicably stops working. This is because, in a nutshell, Dell build in a chip which means only dell chargers can charge dell batteries. If PC world or anyone else says send it of for a motherboard replacement (huge time and massive cost is out of warranty), try using a new dell charger first, or an old round one works fine.
