I decided not to be drawn in by the 'must have an ipod' brigade and look for an alternative non-Apple player that would offer the same quality, as well as featuring a navigable screen instead of the relatively random song selection of some cheaper models.
After reading several positive reviews, I decided that around £30 for a Sansa Clip sounded a bit of a bargain. I found that 2GB of memory is plenty and the sound quality is excellent. I have changed the headphones for another pair which sit further inside my ears for added security. The player is very small and light, and the clip is very secure - ideal for listening on the move. The screen is clear, with logical, hierarchical navigation and the controls are easy to use.
I have read elsewhere that the Clip is not compatible with Apple Macs, but decided to risk it after reading one or two reports to the contrary. Believe me, it's absolutely fine, and files can be dragged into the 'music' folder using the Apple Finder without any problems. Just in case though, I use a utility called 'Finder Cleaner' which is supposed to remove all the invisible Apple-only files which sometimes go along for the ride.
To summarise, the Sansa Clip is fantastic value for money, especially if, like me, you don't care about not having white headphones!
