Bad Points
Thirsty enough, and needs a good specification - base model not too well equipped. Parts and servicing can be expensive.
General Comments
The BMW 525i has excellent handling for a large car. Despite what an earlier reviewer said, there isn't that much body roll for an executive saloon - especially in the m-sport guise. It certainly handles much better than the equivalent Lexus or Mercedes.
It still looks well despite its age, but I would try and get the M-Sport trim as it looks a little fresher (plus suspension is sportier).
The automatic gearbox is excellent. Sport mode and kick-down more than make up for any perceived lack of control over the gears.
Overall, this is an excellent car. Pretty much the perfect balance between comfort and sportiness. I will find it very hard to go back to a manual, as this is just a great automatic car to drive. Find a good independent mechanic - it needs specialist attention, but don't pay BMW dealer prices.
I can't see beyond another E39 as my next car, it's a brilliant all-rounder.
