balfrog's review of Far Cry 2 (Xbox 360)

“The developers have obviously sat around a table and...”

Bad Points
Unfortunately, that is all it has I feel. They have made little effort to improve the game itself which is beyond ridiculous. Firstly, for no good reason they have given the character malaria in a malarial country. As a consequence the game flow is constantly interrupted by malarial attacks for which you require medicine which you have to buy. Secondly, the character cannot jump higher than six inches. In the very first episode you have to reach diamonds in a freight car standing at a platform. To do so, means jumping up approx 12 inches and because your supposedly ultra fit agent cannot jump more than 6 inches you have to search around for smaller boxes and a chair to put in place, however, your character cannot pick up and carry them so you have to shuffle them across the floor into place. Thirdly, you cannot fast forward time except in a safe house, e.g you are told to go to mike's bar to buy medicine and get another task. So, you drive to mike's bar only to find it closed and, helpfully, the opening times are not displayed. So, you have to drive all the way back to the safe house, fast forward time a couple of hours and drive all the way back. If the bar is still not open you repeat the process, again and again and again until it is. Nor does your character have a watch. Alternatively, you could just drive around aimlessly admiring the graphics waiting for something to happen.

General Comments
The developers have obviously sat around a table and asked "how can we improve on Far Cry?". Some bright spark has piped up "let's have stunning graphics" and they succeeded.

However Far Cry 2 is, apart from the graphics, very dated. If you liked Far Cry, Halo, Timeshift, Stalker, Bioshock or any other modern fps then you will hate Far Cry 2 as it is a step backwards, very frustrating and ultimately very boring. My advice? If you are thinking of buying it - don't.
