“The inevitable first sequel suffers because Carpenter...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 05/11/2008

Good Points
Maintains some continuity with the first movie with regards to casting, locations and crew. The transition from the first movie into this is well done. Donald Pleasence is always fun to watch. The plot is more ambitious than in 'Halloween'.

Bad Points
Fails to generate the suspense of the first film. Shows too much of the 'monster', rather like 'Jaws 2' did. Jamie Lee Curtis is not given enough to do and her hair looks different despite it being set on the same night as the first film. The secondary characters are not likeable. Hospital is unrealistically quiet. Gore and swearing are used just for the sake of it.

General Comments
The inevitable first sequel suffers because Carpenter opted not to direct. The brother/sister angle does not make the story any better as it attempts to humanise Myers by giving him some kind of motive. The supporting characters are shallow stereotypes.

Better than most of the later sequels but only because it has greater continuity and is a seamless transition from the first movie. It should be noted that there are different versions of this movie but the bulk of this review applies.
