alban6253's review of Qualcast Concorde 32

“I suppose I was careless with my Qualcast Concorde 32...”

★★☆☆☆

written by alban6253 on 17/09/2008

Good Points
Very light and a tolerable cut (if you're not really into lawns) considering its lack of 'body'. I had one which lasted 4 seasons, but after I accidentally hit a stone the cylinder buckled and the bottom bracket holding the cutter broke. It was never the same again; however on the strength of my experience I bought a new one this year. The same problem has already occurred (stone strike and broken bottom bracket).

Bad Points
Just too light and not robust enough. My grass is not of bowling green standard, but there is not enough weight in the machine to hold it down over irregularities. The frame is not rigid enough, and seems to have 'whip' in it where the surface is not absolutely smooth. I was never totally satisfied with the results of the first one I bought, but went for another one because they are so easy to carry and take up very little storage space.

General Comments
I suppose I was careless with my Qualcast Concorde 32 in not spotting the fatal stone this summer, but it seems the structure is not strong enough to withstand this kind of thing. Worse, the cylinder is obviously of mediocre quality steel and buckles very easily. A new cylinder costs nearly as much as I paid for the whole machine, and even the bracket I need and its associated screws are ridiculously expensive (90 pence for 1 screw, for instance!) Next season I will be looking at something rather more substantial.

One does wonder why they are referred to as lawn mowers and not stone cutters.

Maybe Qualcast should re-name it a stone cutter and you wouldn't have a complaint.
