Carmela and Joe's review of Bugibba, Crown Hotel

“Myself and my partner went to The Crown Hotel...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Carmela and Joe on 28/08/2008

Good Points
The pool on the roof was clean, good size and opened till midnight along with the bar next to it. The hotel was close to local shops and restaurants, bus stops and the beach.

Bad Points
There was a constant stale damp smell in the hotel - I had to hold my nose every time I was in the place - It made me feel sick! The indoor pool was not working. I thought the gym facilities were poor and was far too hot to work out in anyway! I thought some staff were quite unhelpful.

General Comments
Myself and my partner went to The Crown Hotel halfboard for 14 nights. In general the hotel looked rather nice. But there was a constant stale, damp smell in the hotel which made me feel sick!! We arrived at the hotel around 9pm, we were greeted by a man at reception who came across to us as very miserable and unhelpful. Once we found our room we were extremely upset as we were expecting a 4* room! It was on the ground floor in a dark corner next to the cleaners area with no natural day light, the toilet seat was broken and the shower and bathroom was growing mould. We went straight back to the guy on reception and asked to be moved immediately! W found him so extremely unhelpful and it seemed he couldn't care less that his customers were unhappy - he replied saying "We are fully booked, there is nothing I can do you will have to just come back in the morning." We stayed in the room that night and first thing in the morning went straight to the reception desk. This time a lady was on duty who was very nice and helpful, who made sure we were happy with our new room.

I thought all the showers in the rooms were far too small - I couldn't even bend over to get my shower gel or shampoo without banging my head against the wall! The majority of rooms had two single beds in them, and I could feel nothing but the springs of the mattresses. The air con in the room would blow out a disgusting rotten egg smell every now and then on a daily basis. We tried to eat at the hotel restaurant as we had paid half board and in the end went elsewhere for breakfast, lunch and dinner because I became ill we think from the food - yes food poisoning and on top of that I caught some kind of virus. I had to go to hospital I was so ill. The swimming pool on the roof was great fun especially as it stayed open till midnight every night.

I think it was impossible the hotel was a 4*, we would call it a 2/3*. If we hadn't of paid so much money for our holiday we would have found a better hotel in Bugibba the night we arrived!

We would never recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Malta.
