knoba's review of Dewalt DW626 Plunge Router

“This Dewalt DW626 Plunge Router powers through most...”

Written on: 27/07/2008 by knoba (39 reviews written)

Good Points
Heavy (7.5kg) and extremely powerful (2300w). 4m power lead extends available working area. The materials choice and build quality is excellent. Bit changes are easy mainly due to the size of the router's aperture. Comes with fine adjusting fence, kitbox, spanner, 12mm & 6mm collets. Spares available. One of the most abundant base plate fitting types (same as the DW625) and fits my Trend PRT router table without needing an adaptor interface.

Bad Points
After a year I've found the plunge mechanism a little stiff and it probably just requires some cleaning.

General Comments
This Dewalt DW626 Plunge Router powers through most jobs easily and accompanies my router table often. I do use it free hand on occasional, and here, it excels too. Being such a powerful router it removes stock fast and requires fewer passes than smaller routers.

The soft start is very smooth for such a big machine and the fine adjuster fence is better than most. It's surprisingly comfortable and the weight adds a certain steadiness and consistency to the cuts. The electronic no load speed circuits are equally excellent as you can hear the 2300w motor's variable speed controller circuits, actively and constantly making fine adjustments, becoming part of the tool's feel.

Everything is right where you need it; power switch (not dead man's) and plunge lock. It seems well weighted and although that takes away some of the feel, on the type of work it is designed for, it comes out as a bonus as it's reluctant to drift with the wood grain, knots or any other inconsistencies. My only gripe is that I found the fine adjuster for the plunge stop hard to get at while "dropping in" to different rebate levels.

Eye protection is essential as it does tend to throw off a lot of waste quickly.
