kracker's review of Acer Aspire 5610

“This Acer Aspire laptop is a must have for the student...”

Good Points
The acer aspire 5610 has an outstanding array of features that makes it a leader in the mid range of afford ability notebooks. It has a long lasting battery with a life of up to 3.5 hrs with all power saving settings like screen brightness and cpu speed set to max battery life. It has a 256 Mb shared graphics card that is capable of handling the most intensely video demanding games without a problem.

Bad Points
The computer comes preloaded with Windows Vista which takes up a great deal of system resources like hard disc space (10 GB on a hidden partition for vista setup itself + installation files on C drive) as well as a vast amount of RAM. My recommendation is to immediately install windows xp over vista to gain the maximum possible performance out of the computer. Additionally, the computer does not come with windows or driver discs so you have to go to the acer website and download all of the drivers and use Acer's e-recovery software to create a vista install disc in the event you ever wish to return to the already outdated software of vista as there is already a service pack 2 available. The computer also comes with limited software and without discs and a pre-installed anti-virus, the simplest of viruses means you could lose even the limited software that acer provides a new customer.

General Comments
This Acer Aspire laptop is a must have for the student on a budget, a hard core gamer or a businessman in need of an upgrade. This computer is not only cheap (now $1300 new) but is loaded with features like a Intel Core Duo 1.86 GHz processor, an nvidia GeForce 7300 graphics card, 1GB of RAM and a 120 GB Hard Drive (reduced by 15 - 20% with vista). It comes with 4 usb ports (2x back + 2x side) a dvd burner and a wireless network card and much more. This computer is so outstanding that I have convinced two university students and a lawyer to buy one, so this is definitely the computer for you.

Fiona40's Response to kracker's Review

I have an Acer Aspire 5610, bought it new and its a year old. I have always ran it off the mains with the battery inserted. However, last week, the battery icon on the machine was almost empty and red, it then went into hibernation and now I cant use it. It comes on for one second and then goes off again. Any advice would appreciated. Do I buy a new battery, or is it the laptop itself that is at fault?

I had that issue with another laptop I used to own and it was the battery. You can test if the battery has ceased to function correctly by taking it to a battery specialist place, like batteryworld or batteryworks or equivilent. They test it to ensure that it can hold charge and other stuff and depending on what they say, either buy a new battery or look at the computer itself.
