Light Catching Machine's review of Nikon F4s

“For the photographer who doesn't like a lot of...”

Good Points
This camera is about as solid as they come in the autofocus realm of SLR's.
Current value on the used market is remarkable (for the buyer).
No whistles and bells - this camera has all the basic features a professional photographer uses, and nothing more.
Uses almost all Nikon F mount lenses.
Fast Drive (I figure about 5 FPS) with the mb-21 battery pack and vertical grip.

Bad Points
Noisy. The rewind, and the film advance are both rather loud.
Heavy. It's a work out to shoot with one of these, I'd recommend a grip support strap in addition to the standard neck/shoulder strap.
Slow Auto Focus by today's standards. If you need high speed Auto Focus get a different camera.
Some of the button placement could be better (AE/AF lock in particular).

General Comments
For the photographer who doesn't like a lot of extraneous features, this camera is worth serious consideration. There is no LCD readout, just some knobs and buttons that do everything you need them to. Three metering modes, AE/AF lock, Shutter speed, ASA setting, aperture preview, Mirror lock-up, Drive mode, exposure mode (A,S,M,P), seld timer, multi exposure and that is it my friends. This camera is built solid and feels good in the hand, especially with the extra battery pack/vertical grip (with shutter release button), though the AE/AF lock buttons are hard to hit with the mb-21 battery pack attached. I've heard that Nikon does not approve the use of AA Lithium batteries in the F4s, but I have used it for the last five years with lithium batteries and have had no problems. The Lithium batteries weigh less than other batteries and last way longer. I love this camera and I'm sure you will too, if you purchase it knowing what you are getting.

ENJOY.
