alfitz's review of Scarborough, Britannia Grand Hotel

“Hotel has been taken over by Britannia, and I think...”

★★☆☆☆

written by alfitz on 16/08/2006

Good Points
Food in the upgraded Premier Dining room was good, although it was mainly self-service (so why they had waiters! I don't know). Entertainment by the resident band and the permanent entertainment team was very good, they were very energetic, lively and entertaining. Refurbished room (41) was big and had been refurbished, that's all you could say.

Bad Points
Reception staff, Dining staff & Bar staff could do with a smile! A coat hanger would work, but why take it out on the coat hanger! Housekeeping was diabolical. Reception staff ignored you, Bar staff chatted to each other and didn't hear your requests for 'ice' etc. Dining staff had please/thank you off to a 'T' but a smile and a 'good morning' would have been nice - although it did happen when they thought we were leaving!

General Comments
Hotel has been taken over by Britannia, and I think that the staff remaining have a 'chip' on their shoulder about being given extra jobs! (some jobs doubled-up) and took the resentment out on the paying Customers. I actually overheard a Receptionist tell a Customer 'not to shout at her', when she was shouting over the top of him and everyone around! The reception didn't even possess a Telephone Directory? and when I asked for one was asked if I looking for somewhere else to stay?! (The thought HAD crossed my mind). To summarise, we left a day early, the weather was against us, the staff definately were against us, and first (and last) holiday in Scarborough came to an end. I was only glad to get home again.
