bassfuryvi's review of Laney R4 Combo

“I am generally using an evil active Peavey Fury six...”

★★★☆☆

written by bassfuryvi on 17/03/2006

Good Points
Compact cube design, slides into boot easily. Used for electric banjo, Jackson guitar and acoustic guitar, as well as my Peavey Fury VI. It is very loud, and DI out is a blessing for PA morons at local venues.

Bad Points
Okay... I have never yet had a bass tone I was happy with. It's always a compromise, as it seems between tinny and full on fart/kick, or sometimes Godawful, so I bought a Behringer Bass Pro, and now it's sort of controllable.
The vinyl covering is annoying, should have been cloth.

General Comments
I am generally using an evil active Peavey Fury six stringer alongside a Mode Four Marshall Guitarist in my band First Element, so the Laney R4 combo is loud enough at 300 Watts. However, I am thinking that a passive bass may be more favourable to this amp, as the Peavey just seems to overcrank it. For the price now it IS very good, and has only overheated once (but in fairness it was running a 3 ohm 450 watt cab), so it is utterly reliable, but there's just no love yet after three long years. If you have a P or J bass it should be a cracking combo though.
