Takahiro's review of Bomberman DS

“If you've ever played Bomberman before, you know...”

★★★☆☆

written by Takahiro on 29/07/2005

Good Points
8 Way Multiplayer with only one cart. New multiplayer game modes. Still the same old Bomberman you know and love.

Bad Points
Single player is dull. The characters move quite slow, which can be annoying.

General Comments
If you've ever played Bomberman before, you know exactly what to expect. A short, basic single player mode with a great, hectic multiplayer mode. It seems Hudson doesn't quite know what to do with Bomberman Single player, and it won't hold your attention for long, however if you're going to buy Bomberman, then do it for the multiplayer, you won't be dissapointed.

It's as you remember it! You start in your own corner, collect pick ups, and blow each other to dust. If you have never played Bomberman before, there are pickups to increase your speed, blast radius, and how many bombs you can leave at once. The old special pickups return with 'Tri-Bomb', which allows you to leave all your bombs at once, the Glove to pick up and throw your bombs, the Kick-Bomb which allows you to kick bombs across the arena, the shield which can protect you, and some different bomb types, such as, the remotely detonated 'bouncy' bombs, power bombs, and blue blast bombs, that can blast straight through blocks.

The new addition is the 8-player, which takes place on both the top and bottom screens, and there are some new game modes thrown in too. Some of which involve the microphone to lay or detonate your bombs, and it all gets silly when 8 of you are sitting on a bus yelling 'bang' at your DS, but you'll be having fun, and only one of you actually needs the game to play 8-player, you can't go wrong! If you don't have 7 friends then you can turn on AI characters to fill in.

So, if you have no friends, or no friends with a DS, then Bomberman is a slow, boring game that you will trade in within a week, but with friends, it turns into one of the best party games ever.

The ratings are based on the game in general: For multiplayer, I'd give it a 10 Addiction Level, Value for money - 9 and Overall - 8.
