Bob.'s review of Isuzu Trooper 3.2 Limited

“I was lured into buying a `90 Trooper because I though...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bob. on 16/12/2002

Good Points
Cheap, they don't hold their value very well. Several `80s and '90's models are on cars.com for under $1,000 USD.

Bad Points
Unsafe- one star on the US crash tests. Expensive to operate. Plastic 4x4 components. Rarely known to go beyond 150,000 miles before major engine trouble. Easily dented, thin sheet metal. Etc, etc...

General Comments
I was lured into buying a `90 Trooper because I though it looked kind of like a Land Rover Discovery or Defender. At least it was affordable- only $1,200 USD. Sadly, I soon found out the Isuzus are about the worst and most dangerous vehicles on the road. That's why you see so few on the road and their resale value is almost nonexistant. It's too bad Isuzu hasn't yet got their act together to make a tough, big, affordable SUV.

What do you expect for under $2000, Try buying a newer model, then enjoy the trip. My Trooper is 2001 auto with TOD, Limited slip etc, etc. It has conquered the most demanding 4x4 trails in the San Juan mts out of OURAY colorado, That includes the fabeled Black bear trail from Hwy 550 over to Telluride. Look it up, we have been very happy with performance and reliability, I also pull my travel trailer with it, power is plenty to haul the 2500 lb 17 ft trailer. For the money it can't be outdone. and even for more money you can't get more great features and options, Free.

I have a 1990 Isuzu Trooper with the 2.8V6/manual tranny. I have 247,000 miles on it. I did change the engine, but only after 205,000 miles 2 years ago. It is a GM engine- same that goes into the Chevy S-10's. And as far as off roading, I have the safari rack, offroad lights and I take it down to the NC beaches all the time, and you know what? While I saw the newer Jeep cherokees getting stuck(6 total)and other vehicles, My Trooper just plowed right through the deep sand.

Bob, of course the 80s Isuzu (and Pajero, etc.) are basic, unrefined, rugged, plasticy inside. Back then there was no such concept as the SUV with road car luxuries. Sounds like you should get yourself a "street 4x4" if you don't want the boxy basicness of the real 4x4s. As for safety, almost ALL the 4x4s are rated less safe than road cars. So if you want some 4x4, some luxury, and safety, you should be looking at the Volvo AWD or X-Country. You're in the wrong shop!
