“I recently visited my local Vue cinema in Bury I had...”

★★★☆☆

written by The Frog Of Knowledge on 21/06/2004

Good Points
Big Screens that weren't too busy.
They Show all the best films.

Bad Points
Riduculously expensive.

General Comments
I recently visited my local Vue cinema in Bury I had been before when it was still known as Warner Bros. It seems they have used there pointless name change to hike the prices up a bit more. For an adult it cost £5.60, how mad is that, for the price of two of us we could have bought the film on DVD when it came out. No wonder the cinema was practically empty. It seems that when the cinema becomes half full they put up the prices to try and make as much money as if the cinema was full. Why don't these people think the other way and lower the prices so that people are more willing to go to the cinema and therefore it would be full and they'd probably make as much money. When it costs 3 times as much to go to the cinema than rent a film (and that's from Blockbuster). Cinema seats seem to be incapable of being comfortable and Vue's really lack leg room, and I'm only 5'11", I have no idea how taller people would manage to enjoy a 3 hour long film cramped in there. Though I do like having cup holders on your seats, which most other modern cinemas seem to have now as well.

Having complained bitterly so far and not even mentioned the cost of food and drinks (£1.30 for a bottle of diet coke) I should at least mention the positives. The screens are big and cinema is always clean and tidy. You can always guarantee that the big films are going to be on and at a time that will suit you. You can also generally get a nice seat in the middle with no one talking in your ear because It's so expensive. The website is also good so that you can easily find out when which films are on. The parking facilities are also good but you expect that from an out of town cinema.

To summarise, my only real complaint is about the price. I think for a cinema of Vues quality in the north of England you should be looking at about £4.00 a film particularly on a week night when it's dead. I know to the cost of two of us going this is only a difference of £3 which isn't a lot but it's the principle of not being ripped off. I will go back because I love films and it's the nearest cinema to my house, but I think they need to rethink the price.

I personally think that it quite reasonable considering it costs a lot more where I live. Here we pay 7 to 8 pounds at any of the main cinema chains

I just went to my local Vue and was not allowed in because I did not have my NU card. I bought the tickets online, as I always do but this time was stopped by a weasel security guard and a little Hitler girl who barked the rules at me.

I don't mind bringing my card, but the web site does not say to. I complained to the manger, and 2 came out for little me and they too towed the party line like little comrades.

Ok, I really don't mind taking my card in, but I have never been asked to. They said there are signs up, which I did not see. The upshot is that I spent £30 on tickets and junk food and did not get to see any film.

The reason it is dwindling at Vue is partly down to the attitude of these people. I have seen it go from crowded to nothing over the past few years.

I think it is particularly bad on service and I have witnessed the staff being rude to people loads of times. They seem on self destruct when it comes to service. Even the lad who served me apologised about the price of food and the elementary comment above from the manager is indicative of the type of people they employ. Frankly, it's crass and un-clever.

I am going to the Odeon from now on, they are polite and cheaper. Vue have just lost yet another regular customer.

I have been to the Omni Vue cinema in Edinburgh on two occasions. Neither visit was condusive of a cinematic experience. As I had to get my ticket at a food counter I got the impression they were more interested in selling me overpriced junk food that a ticket to the cinema. On the last vist they actually gave me the wrong ticket and I ended up seeing a film I had no interest in. That's how interested they were in paying attention to their customers wishes rather than their own. This seems to confirm the information supplied by the Mnager of the Leicester cinema who advises the profits are in the food and not showing films!
The building itself is quite new but the overall impression is of a run down and depressing place.
My ticket cost £4.50 for a matinee seniors ticket.

I am a manager of the Vue cinema in Leicester and just wanted to answer some of your points. Our name was changed to Vue after Warner Village sold us. It was not changed as a marketing gimmick to increase prices - we are now a totally different company and have nothing to do with Warners. Cinema prices do seem expensive but are you aware that almost 60% of the tickets price goes straight back to the film company who made the movie. They are the ones who tell us how much we should be charging. We would love to make prices £4.00 and get losts of people coming in but then the bigger film companies would not give us their movies as they would make less profit. Also go to the theatre and pay £30 for a 2 hour show. On the subject of paying £1.30 for a diet coke, thats not bad at all. The only profit cinemas really make is on food and thats why it is expensive. The average person in the Uk will go to the cinema every 2 months so I am sure they can afford to splash out a little. Its the very same when you go to a theme park or motorway service station - they charge more to cover all the overheads. I love the movies but get so annoyed with people moaning all the time about how its so expenisive and how they are being ripped off.

I agree with the reviewer, Vue is very expensive. The Edinburgh Vue was much better when it was the Warner Village but still quite expensive then as well. The Edinburgh Cinema is very clean apart from Friday/Saturday nights when it gets very busy.
