“very disappointing”

My wife and I booked to stay at Villa Horizon on two occasions in 2017. In February 2017 we booked to stay at Villa Horizon for 14 nights over Christmas 2017. We also booked Villa Horizon for a 6 night holiday from 31st May to 6th June 2017.

We would like to make other potential guests aware, before they book, that we had the following significant issues with our stay from 31st May to 6th June 2017:

• When we arrived the floors throughout, and by the pool, were very dusty and dirty; in the master bedroom bathroom in particular the floor was black with dirt. When we walked on the floors our feet became dirty very quickly. We had to request the maid to thoroughly clean all the floors.
• The house was very very hot and not welcoming when we arrived.
• We found some pieces of partly digested chicken under the sofa in the bar/terrace area, which we cleaned up.
• Much of the furniture, especially in the lounge and on the patio looked very old and tired.
• Cheap plastic flowers on the table was a very poor welcome; there was not even a welcome drink for guests.
• One of the umbrellas was not operational as a spoke had been broken previous to our stay.
• The patio by the pool was very very slippery and highly dangerous when wet. There was no notice to warn guests of this and, in our opinion, an accident is highly likely in the future.
• The patio loungers were old, are very uncomfortable, and had dark brown unattractive cushions.
• The chairs at the outside patio table were too low to sit and eat comfortably.
• Using the kitchen was not pleasant. It was extremely uncomfortable as there is no a/c, the mobile fan just blows out warm air, and the lighting is very dim. The induction hob was very difficult to use.
• The sound and TV system in the lounge is very complicated, and requires 4 pages of instructions !
• The area surrounding the villa was very noisy. There weree several sites close by the villa where construction works are on-going, and neighbours have very loud barking dogs. It does not allow for a quiet relaxing stay.
• There was a local bonfire during our stay which deposited black dust on the patio.

However, we tried very hard to be positive and to enjoy our stay, because we are positive guests who understand the challenges of home holiday rentals.

Because of family illness challenges we had to cancel our Christmas booking at Villa Horizon. We cancelled this booking on 26th March 2017. Although we gave the owner 9 months notice prior to our booked arrival of our need to cancel this booking (and so plenty of time to obtain a replacement booking) he refused to refund any part of our deposit of us$2,500. We tried to negotiate fairly and offered to accept even a 50% deposit return. He refused again. We lost all our deposit money.

We wish to warn others before booking to be very aware of the issues we found at Villa Horizon. In particular we advise others to take extreme care if you decide to book to stay at Villa Horizon and think that you may have genuine need to cancel after making your booking.

In light of our experiences we do not wish to stay again at Villa Horizon.
