“We bought our Washington Corner Group suite (leather...”

written by bevandtim on 10/04/2008

Good Points
Cheap, sales staff friendly in Hedge End, Southampton store where purchased.

Bad Points
Poor aftersales service.

General Comments
We bought our Washington Corner Group suite (leather with electric recliners) from SCS Sofas on 13th October 2007. We purchased a display model at sale price as we do not like waiting for the long delivery times quoted. Approximately 3-4 weeks after delivery, my girlfriend (then 2 months pregnant) injured herself whilst leaning over the armrest of one of the recliner to pick up a cup of tea from the floor.

We contacted SCS and advised them what had happened and they then sent an upholsterer around. We have since commenced civil legal action claiming damages for personal injury.

April 2008 and another problem with the suite occurred. My now 8 month pregnant girfriend found out when she moved forward in the reclined chair (not trying to get up) and the recliner and seat next to it tipped away and separated from the corner unit, throwing her again forward. Luckily this time the only effects were shock.

This has now been checked by an Upholstery Manager from SCS who has taken photos and said a report will be made in 7-10 days. Trading Standards have also now inspected the sofa at our request.

Trading Standards are now investigating.

We are now in the process of speaking with Consumer Direct to have advised us to demand a full refund (of what we have so far paid on the interest free credit) and that the suite be collected from us. If SCS fail to collect and refund then Consumer Direct will take further action.

Our advice: Do not under any circumstances deal with SCS unless you are prepared for a lengthy and stressful after sales battle.

Our situation is ongoing (6 months from date of purchase), left with a broken suite (baby due in 4 weeks), still paying for the privilege (outstanding finance) and a civil legal battle.
