“I was keen to try this on some very old cracked and...”

written by Fuchsia Perfect on 22/01/2008

Good Points
Did what it was supposed to do, on very uneven walls.
Dried quickly.
Was only slightly more difficult than normal Polyfilla to use.

Bad Points
Spreading tool is too large to fit in container.
Coverage area less than claimed on container.
Expensive for area covered (compared with B&Q version).

General Comments
I was keen to try this on some very old cracked and uneven plaster in a room we're redecorating. The surface is a mixture of old bluish plaster (with horsehair!), patches of old filler, and powdery pink plaster. I bought the Smoothover, then my partner was told by someone he works with that it was difficult to use, then I read the reviews - I was very tempted not to try it!

However, not wanting the old man to say "I told you so", I said I'd give it a go. Having wrestled the top off I found that the spreading tool was too large to load from the container. I gave the filler a good stir (with my partner's favourite screwdriver) and decanted it into a clean cat litter tray - perfect! If you bend back the edges of the spreader tool and use a semicircular sweeping motion to apply it, it's not too difficult although it was a lot thicker than I expected. It reminded me of icing Christmas cakes with thick white royal icing when I was a kid. I found the best technique was to squish the filler into deeper holes with my fingers, then sweep the spreader over the area with more filler, to even it out.

Although it covered only half the area I expected, the wall surface was VERY poor before so there were more cavities to fill than normal. It dried in about 6 hours and needed some light sanding in some areas but I'm very pleased with the result - and my partner is almost speechless! If a 56 year old woman with average domestic decorating experience can use this, it can't be that bad... But why on earth have they made a spreader that doesn't fit in the container?
