Good Points
The main character is a Ninja
You fight other Ninjas
You have a large selection of weapons for use that can be upgraded
There are Demons and other such Nasties to fight
The Graphics are brilliant
There's a strong antagonist
Bad Points
Enemies are super powerful
Defense stance is the way of the ninja, mostly
The Female character is laughable in ways I can't say here
The camera is always in the wrong place
There's no lock on for enemies
£40 for a game that was released some time ago on other consoles
General Comments
A terrible thing to say but the bad points do outweigh the good for this game. That is until you take the easier option that is open to you if you die quite often. The game on normal is hard or very hard on any other game. I slugged through the first five levels on this difficulty and was ready to sell the game. The frustration of constantly dying was massive. The worst thing was having no way of targeting enemies off screen which with the badly planned camera seems to be where they are most of the time. The camera also makes the jumps to and from ledges a chore with the need to repeat so frequent. On the easier setting the game plays a lot better with a quicker pace but still has the camera problems.
Another problem I had was the lack of story from the start of the game. The story only really starts to pick up from level 4 onwards with the earlier levels having a lack of coordination:
Level 1 Ninja Training
Level 2 Ninja Town
Level 3 Airship
Level 4 Chinese City
I had the basis of the Ninja Gaiden story but it felt hollow as it clearly had not given enough information. It does start to build later on so its only a minor grievance.
Anyway to the good bits. You play for the most part in the game as a Ninja. Which is very very cool. And you can do loads of ninja moves like Running on water, Running across walls, Jumps and backflips, Loads of sword play, throwing stars yadda yadda yadda, you get what ninja action is. You also have really different types of enemies ranging from soldiers to ninjas to demons and lots of boss fights.
You also have ninja powers Nimpo's which do affect your ranking if you use them but add an extra attack against those harder then normal foes.
You can also buy ninja related items and get certain weapons updated which gives you an abundance of new moves.
You also play as a female character who is a demon hunter and it will probably be this side of the story that you will find more interesting as the introduction of the character is done far better then your ninja characters. However you are limited to moves with this character and the animation will leave you with a childish grin on your face.
Last but not least the graphics and sounds on this game are brilliant and really allow the quality of the PS3 to shine, however load screens that are reduced with a partial load to the Hard Disk Drive are a frequent occurrence and can spoil the flow of the game from time to time.
In all a very good game with likeable characters, but if you find poor camera work a problem then probably not a game for you
