“We saw the mixed reviews before we went but based on...”

written by Scott V on 07/02/2011

We saw the mixed reviews before we went but based on positive comments from friends who have been we thought we would give it a go. Unfortunately I think the reviews pretty much summed it up - on balance it is OK, at best.

We didn't think it overly expensive but it cost a tad more than what we would have expected. Our girls (aged 7 & 4) were initially quite intimidated by the gloominess and general spooky feeling but one of the characters took time to chat to the girls, get them comfortable and show them the play area which they loved. Credit to the staff for trying so hard.

The ride was a diappointment, fortunately there was no queue as the ride certainly wasn't worth waiting for. A (almost painfully) slow meander through some dingy buildings with very little effects of any kind and one drop.

The animatronic & 4D shows were quite good, but the former lacked atmosphere with only about 15 people in the theatre. As our 7 year old pointed out though there were only 3 robotos in the animatronic show and the rest were projections.

The street theatre was quite embarassing to watch. Why they have to mime I do not know and the 'compere' in his bad taste jumper under a gold waistcoat (typical Victorian dress?) when he played Scrooge was a sight to behold - am dram at its worst. It was also a bit of a surprise to see him smoking outside the main entrance when we arrived!

The staff try their hardest and are very enthusiastic, but some more characters to generate some atmosphere - in the square, a teacher in the school room, a shop keeper in the grocery for example - this could be better. Based on the attendance the day we went however it is difficult to see they would ever generate enough money to invest in the business.
