“My £14 went a long way. Heres what i got.”

written by MrTortoise23 on 14/04/2017

I went to poundland for the first time today having heard there some great deals on USB charging wires, HDMI cables Etc. I had about £15 to spend here. I have bought a total of 17 items, including several things i have wanted or needed recently. For a total of £13.60
Here is what i bought for my £13.60:

1) A Potato Peeler. I had been meaning to get a peeler for ages. (one of those things that never made it to the shopping list. A comfortably sized plastic handle, holding the swivelly blade. £1 - perfect. Looks and feels good quality. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=8/10

2 and 3) Twenty SONY Batteries. here i got 10 pack (8+2 free) of SONY AAA zinc batteries, and a second packet of the larger AA size for half price. Totalling £1.50 for 20 batteries. Branded Quality batteries perfect for remote controls and my mouse/keyboard. Overall Scores: Product=9/10 Value9/10

4) A SignalEX Digital Indoor TV Arial. I dont watch live TV as i only use On-Demand apps to watch things over the internet. But I though id try this out as its only a pound. This looks cheap and plasticky at first glance. Upon unpacking I found the cable length to be very short. I plugged it in to my TV Screen and It actually works... Kind of. My TV has freeview built in (that ive never used) and this arial is picking up a few channels Ok. Its a bit of a game moving the thing around to pick up any other channels and the cable's too short. Il probably never use it (unless for some project requiring an arial), But it works. Overall Scores: Product=5/10 Value=7/10

5) A SignalEX 10 in 1 Remote Control. Another thing i wanted recently, in order to control my media center (RPi with KODI). I tried it on a TV just now to see if it works. Upon opening, Its made from that cheapo plastic. I followed the instructions and hey presto it works, kind of. The working buttons are channel up/down volume up/down, the number keys and the power button. Unfortunately volume buttons operate the wrong way round, but the price is unreal at £1. Overall Scores: Product=5/10 Value=9/10.

6, 7 and 8) 3 for £1 - Mr Fotherby's Herb Seeds packets. 1 packet of basil, 1 packet of coriander and 1 packet of parsley seeds. Yet another thing ive been meaning to buy for the windowsill. I use coriander and basic quite often in cooking and i just like to munch on stalks of parsley sometimes. Seems like a fair deal. I cant comment on the quality as i havent grown them yet. Overall Scores: Product=?/10 Value=8/10.

9)Hydro Coco - Coir Grow Cubes. Perfect for my seeds, These are squares of dried compressed soil inside unfoldable 1 Litre bags. You add water and the grow medium expands to fill the bag. Genius. They are a perfect size for the kitchen windowsill. These seem perfectly sized to grow my herbs in. Looks like a good quality product. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=8/10

10) Tommy Walsh 5Pcs Paint Brush Set. Another thing that I need. I have recently bought some liquid latex, plaster and a bulk amount of modelling clay to experiment with mould making. I need some brushes to apply my first layers of latex to the original models to avoid bubbles on the mould surface. These brushes should do the job nicely. On closer inspection they are as good quality as most hardware store brushes that i've seen. At only 1 pound for 5, i can afford to destroy these with dried up latex. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=10/10

11) Tommy Walsh 1.5" packet Screws. I needed screws to make a simple small hobby table. I've just drilled some holes near the corners of an MDF board and then used these screws to screw a length of wood to each corner. Yep, these are decent screws as you would expect screws to be. My table is steady enough for now i can strengthen it later. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=6/10

12) Tommy Walsh Tools Storage Box. This is a plastic tool box. Not strong enough for contractors, but perfect to keep my non-electric tools and hobby bits in. ive filled the base with my hammer, alan key set, starkey set, screwdriver, spanners, paintbrushes etc, and the top compartmentalised section with screws, wallpluggs, hobby knives and other small items. Its not very strong but perfect for home/hobby use. Only £1. Overall Scores: Product=7/10 Value=10/10

13)Charlie Dimmock 50Pk 30cm Bamboo flower sticks. I needed some kind of wooden skewers to stick into a polystyrene head to hold modelling clay in place while i create a design for a rubber mask. These should do the job perfectly. Overall Scores: Product=6/10 Value=7/10

14) 300g smoked ham. Looks like a large packet for £1 and i quite fancy a ham sandwich. Slices are equally sized and tasty. better than cheap supermarket ham. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=9/10

15) Ladle and straining spoon. I have needed a ladle a few times recently. These look decent quality. good value. Overall Scores: Product=8/10 Value=9/10

16) 180g roasted and salted nuts. Hmm, mixed salted nuts. the picture on the packet has a equal mix of almonds cashews peanuts. On opening the bag, disaster face. very dissapointed to find its just peanuts. I poured them out into a bowl and found 2 almonds and about 6 cashews. just peanuts left, i dont really like peanuts, someone else will eat those. Overall Scores: Product=3/10 Value=3/10

17)A Re-usable carrier bag. To carry my stuff home in. 10 pence. Exactly what you would expect from a strong carrier bag. it carried my things home. I could use it again. Overall Scores: Product=N/A Value=N/A

Overall Experience: Excellent 9/10. Spending a total of 13.60, I felt a bit like a small child in a sweet shop. There's quite a few things i will have to go back for such as a head torch and a nostril hair trimmer and some food items. I enjoyed this shopping experience and feel i have a great overall deal for my bag of stuff. The shop was tidy and nicely laid out. The staff were polite and courteous. I got served quickly at the checkout. I have anxiety issues and normally only shop online but i will definately be returning to poundland for the deals i missed and the HDMI cable that i forgot to pick up. Excellent.
