“Buy the saddle bags if you are serious about touring....”

Good Points
I bought the Saddle bags and the tank bag for my Thunder Bird about 3 months back and have been on almost 5- 6 really long rides with them. The convenience factor is really worth mentioning, what with the easy mount/ unmount, collapsible- when- not- in- use design. The Saddle bags are also relatively waterproof. I had a few clothes wet in patches, but after riding 3 hours in a torrential tropical downpour. The tank bag is also the same, with very little water seeping in. Besides looking absolutely fantastic on the bike, the storage space they offer is really cavernous, with room to stuff in stuff for about a week to 10 days. The additional tripod/ tent/ waterbottle holders and a bunch of straps all around the bags provide for almost unlimited flexibility for luggage carrying requirements.

Bad Points
The inner side of the saddle bag has removed some of the paint off the canisters on the bike's gas shocks. But, given the nature of touring, I think this is negligible compared to the vast number of other scratches and nicks the bike suffers. As they say, you win some, you lose some.

General Comments
Buy the saddle bags if you are serious about touring. I mean really long distance touring. If you want to show off in the city in front of the local pub, you are better off buying the leather variety and staying off the highway.
