“We visited in peak holiday season during August 2010,...”

written by 1971vagabond on 22/08/2010

We visited in peak holiday season during August 2010, and stayed in a Silver 4-bed chalet. Plus points: nicely situated at the top of a hill, very large lounge/ diner, great full-size dining table, large fridge/ freezer, modernised, minimal noise at night, beds quite comfy. Minus points: beds unmade on arrival, smelly and did not feel particularly clean, useless shower with no pressure. Park Resorts now do a staggered check-in depending on accommodation grade- and on arrival at 2.30pm, there were only a few people in front of me and a nice relaxed atmosphere.

The site's facilities were poor in comparison with Camber Sands, another Park Resorts site we visited last summer. The Manor House, where all the entertainment is, smelt (especially the toilets which were horrendous) and was ill-suited to house all the facilities. The arcade was spread across rooms and many machines not working. There was no separate bar/ cafe as at Camber Sands, and the queues for the bar some evenings were ridiculous, stretching round the venue. They kept running out of kids drinks and crisps. The venue was too small and there was insufficient seating. The staff were generally great but seemed very overworked, you get a sense that Park Resorts pay poor wages, expect too much and do not properly reward or value their employees. The evening entertainment is pretty good, though less professional than Camber Sands last year. Kids Clubs not bad, though these are generally not up-to-much, perhaps beacause the same (usually young) staff who perform on stage late into the evening then have to entertain kids from 9.30am. Adventure playground pretty good and pools (indoor and outdoor) OK, though changing facilities and toilets by outside pool absolutely disgusting. Another moan- the launderette has only four small-ish, very slow dryers, meaning that people end up queueing for them- I ended up returning a number of times during the same day only to constantly find all dryers busy, so gave up in the end and attempted to dry clothes on airers, etc.

Although Camber Sands was too large and less pleasantly situated, Bideford Bay is an essentially pleasant site with some major flaws. As a male, I am generally not too bothered about t he condition of toilets, but these were so horrendous that I actively avoided them.
