“My set has seen a number of, (and a range of),...”

Good Points
I own a 1984-5 black Premier APK Royale 5-pc. kit. I am it's one and only owner.

I was always able to tune the entire set and make them sound big. The lugs are the most beautiful and attractive design I have ever seen. The best features were that the Tri-Star hi-hat had legs that, when folded in, also still touched the floor, which still added support if so desired to play like that; the hi-hat could also have the legs either flared all the way out (but that caused interference with the spring tension adjustment lever and the tightening wing bolt for the legs) or spread mid way up. The toms and bass had the insides painted or stained black, which always looked cool to me. The "lip" height of the metal tom hoops are very close to the head, which allows most of the body and the entire neck of a drum stick to really lay into the head.

Bad Points
The snare stand's 7 o'clock and 5 o'clock arms always inched out of place, making my snare sometimes "fall" out of the basket. It's a very poor design, however original. The hi-hat has always been a little noisy and the bottom hi-hat seat has a broken "sleeve" where it's supposed to protect the bottom cymbal from the metal rod. My 12" tom has a 5-lug pattern - this is extremely rare and makes it most difficult finding a replacement for the sake of rebuilding the kit. The bass drum tom arm does not have the now more common 360 Omniball clamps, so positioning these toms is always a compromise. Lastly, and I am so sad to say, my 13" has somehow, about 15yrs ago or so, become slightly out-of-round by 2-3mm. New heads now "pivot" and makes it difficult to tune properly. Finally, I have broken several lug casings off the snare shell- the part that actually goes through the shell and receives the screw- I think maybe as many as 4 overall have broken. Thankfully I have somehow scavenged another, older Olympic Premier snare drum for parts.

General Comments
My set has seen a number of, (and a range of), recording studios and has even found time on a local radio station back in 1990. This set played great on stage and recorded mostly well, except for some strange unidentifiable hardware noise the first time around. Other than that, I have always been pleased with getting the kind of sound that garnered not-too-infrequent compliments!
