“This is my second Freelander. My earlier 2 litre...”

written by JMH07 on 05/05/2007

Good Points
Nice to drive, with a good high position and great handling on the road for a 4x4 vehicle. Good economy at 40 mpg in day to day use. Holds the road like a leach in any weather, and unbeatable on wet grass etc.
High torque pulls it up hills effortlessly, with few gear changes.

Bad Points
Not particularly quick from a standing start, but reasonable once on the move.
Not suitable for racing drivers, it's not designed for that.
3 door removable top is too much like hard work to remove quickly.
Engine oil needs nearly 7 litres to change.

General Comments
This is my second Freelander. My earlier 2 litre diesel had the L series Rover engine, and the TD4 is a vast improvement.

With a consistent 40 MPG, and pleasant drive, I would recommend them.

Mine is a 'Kalahari' edition, so I benefit from such goodies as, Air con, 17" alloys, half leather seats and 6 CD autochanger.

If you contemplate buying one, i would advise you to look for a high spec model.

It makes a huge difference to the driving standard of the vehicle and you will easily re coup the price difference on re sale, whilst it will attract more interest.

Another thing to look for is good tyres! A decent set can cost around £500!

Mine are Michelin Syncrone, and trust me, they will give you years of excellent service.

So, if you want a go anywhere, economical 4x4, then yes- get one, but think again if you want to race around like a delinquent, that is not their purpose.
