I recently purchased an XJ6 3.0 Executive from my local Jaguar dealership, having owned the excellent S-Type 2.7 diesel for the past 18 months. First impressions of the big Jag are very positive overall. The interior is exquisitely appointed, with all the usual features that distinguish these cars from their competitors - there is an air of class and that unique Jag ambience that makes ownership feel special and privileged. Outside, the car is well-proportioned and stately. It attracts attention and admiration in a positive way and doesn't cause resentment from other road users. That said, it's a tad impractical for tough family use and you'll need to steer clear of tight parking spaces and other avoidable risky scenarios.
Performance from the 3.0 V6 is pretty sharp but you do feel like you need to boot it to really get the Jag moving apace with other traffic. It feels serene and competent rather than swift and sporty but the driving experience is extremely refined and effortless nonetheless. Particularly praiseworthy is the 6 speed ZF auto, which complements the engine exceptionally well - a feature it shares with the S-Type.
The downside? The boot is small for a car of this class and interior space isn't quite as generous as you'd expect. But you buy one because it has boundless character, soul, class and presence, in contrast to the clinical efficiency of it's Germanic competitors. So far, so very, very good....
