“I researched digital cameras for a couple of weeks...”

written by Alan Somers. on 27/05/2000

Good Points
Inexpensive. Compact. Controls are well laid out. Takes great pictures.

Bad Points
File naming system is flawed. Won't accept add-on lenses. Doesn't come standard with rechargeable batteries.

General Comments
I researched digital cameras for a couple of weeks before finally deciding on the D-460 Zoom. I originally had my eye on an Olympus C-2020 Zoom but, after assessing the additional costs associated with accessories, I decided to set my sights a little lower. I have not regretted a minute of it, although I've had the camera for only about 10 days. I have photographed subjects from our four cats to close-ups of flowers in our wildflower garden with great success. Digital is definitely the way to go for macro photography because you can use the LCD to make sure that the shot is lined up properly. I am somewhat disappointed that the camera comes with non-rechargeable lithium batteries instead of rechargeable NiHM batteries. I'm also a little confused about the way the camera names the picture files on the media; it's not at all well documented and, in "Auto File" mode, the file numbers don't reset when the date changes (the date and file number are both part of the file name). It would have also been nice if the lens had threads for add-on lenses but I can't fault the camera too much for that due to the sliding cover that protects the lens (the cover wouldn't close if an add-on lens was attached). Despite its shortcomings, I would heartily recommend this camera to anyone who wants a very capable camera at a good price.
