“If pride is worth more than happiness, then the VW...”

written by etas on 23/06/2008

Good Points
Interior is easy to clean and looks simple
Nice design touches with good feel
Good economy from turbo diesel engine
Feels tough

Bad Points
Grey everywhere - like those buildings in Skegness
Where parts feel very premium, other areas such as the cupholder feel cheap..
It's pedantic for me to complain about the added features on this car where other cars charge a premium for such as the cup holder... but it some ways it makes the Polo feel mre at home in the budget sector.
I also really don't like that big slab on the fascia that shouts to me that I'm a miser (which I am mind you...) and the blank button switches. I know I'm expecting a lot and paying little so I really shouldn't moan.

General Comments
If pride is worth more than happiness, then the VW Polo is for you.

It makes me feel more content in comparison to what else I could have bought for the money.

Driving it is surprisingly fun. I used to own a 52reg Mini Cooper S, which was great in performance. This 75bhp diesel Polo is not far behind, and the handling is pretty fun.

In comparison to say a Nissan Micra, it feels substantial. Better quality platics all round and unfussy layout actually place it in a class above and set new standards for quality in other super minis.

Economy ? Strange one this. VW claims 60.1mpg. I reckon I'm averaging 54mpg using a light foot (Surprising my Cooper S used to average 49mpg with a light foot (a tribute also to it's 6th gear).

Overall - I have mixed feelings with this car. In times of high fuel prices, it provides an extra comfort feeling that I'm not wasting so much in fuel as my previous cars (but then that encourages me to drive it more often..).

It's a solid buy, but I never tend to smile when I'm in this car.... A Nissan Micra which has a lower quality feel, does however. Sometimes cheaper can be more cheerful...
