“My cat is a very fussy eater - she will only eat...”

written by GreenDarcy on 25/06/2007

Good Points
Easy dosage - half a tablet will worm 2.5kg weight of cat, so for a 2.5-5kg cat, like my little girl who's 3.8kg, just feed her a whole tablet.

A good alternative to having to force tablets down your cats throat.

Bad Points
My cat would not eat the tablet.

General Comments
My cat is a very fussy eater - she will only eat Asda's complete dry food and human-grade tuna flakes. In the past I have had a nightmare trying to worm her. I have always used Johnson's Twin Wormer tablets (the pink and fawn ones) on my cat, which are very effective, but I dreaded the actual administration. My cat would clamp her mouth shut and I'd have to pry it open, all the time while she's squirming and wriggling - I didn't have enough hands to keep her still. Then to actually put the tablet in her mouth and try to get her to swallow it was almost impossible. I'd have to hold her muzzle shut, tilt her head up and stroke her throat for a good minute or two (whilst trying to stop her from running off), just to eventually let go and see her spit it back out and have to begin it all over again.

I felt this ordeal was not fair on my cat or myself. She's such a chatty, placid and affectionate little girl who has never bitten or scratched any of my family. I had to find another way.

So I scoured the local pet shops, but I couldn't find anything else different, and I was not going to pay atrocious over-inflated vet prices. Then I did a search on Google and came up with the Panacur Favourites for Cats, which seemed the perfect solution to all our worming problems, as all the bumph said that cats couldn't resist the taste and would happily eat the tablet with no fuss. So I ordered a packet of 2 tablets from an online vet store for only £3.90 with free delivery.

They come in an informative box and foil strip, so it's easy to pop the tablet out and give it the cat...but my cat flatly refused to eat the tablet! She just looked at it, had a sniff and then turned her nose up in disgust, and went back to eating her dry food!

I had to resort to crumbling the tablet up and mixing it into her favourite food - tuna flakes in spring water, and even then instead of wolfing her dinner down within two minutes like normal, she took her 20 minutes to pick her way through, trying to avoid the wormer bits...and leaving a few. I think next time I'll try the Panacur Granules.

To conclude, the Panacur Favourites for Cats are a great idea, but will not suit every cat. I recommend that if you have a cat who will eat just about anything, these wormers will work a treat; but if your cat is rather fussy, like my little madam (a tortoiseshell and white none-the-less!), I would either expect to have to mix the tablet in food or stick to granules.
