“Having owned a mk3 SEAT Ibiza 1.8 20VT Cupra since...”

written by Scoobz on 20/01/2005

Good Points
Whether it is the mk3 or mk4 Cupra Turbo they are both solid performers in standard format plus for relatively little cost or effort the ECU can be remapped to offer decent increases in performance. They are light, attractive, sporty, rapid and good value for money. Well worth a look at if that's what floats your boat!

Bad Points
As with all things there are downsides. The Ibiza is light and so modified (remapped) performance can be a little difficult to transfer to the road surface. Understeer is always an issue with FWD cars and a remapped Cupra is no exception.

General Comments
Having owned a mk3 SEAT Ibiza 1.8 20VT Cupra since 2001 I can honestly say I have been very impressed with the quality of vehicle SEAT can produce. Out of the box the mk3 came with 156bhp and this may well be adequate for many to play with. The new mk4 Cupra comes with an uprated 180bhp but still from the same engine.

For relatively low investment (£280-500) the ECU can be remapped and this will offer decent improvements in power and torque (e.g. ~200-220bhp from a simple remap).

The car isn't exactly practical if you have a family and plan on moving lots of large items around as the boot isn't particularly large and the rear cabin is a little cramped but then the car isn't built for that I suppose.

Performance is impressive, especially when remapped, sensible driving can offer an entertaining drive and for those wanting to take to the track or drag strip, some upset could well be caused for people not expecting the car to run 6 second 0-62mph times!! Lots of fun to be had and all wrapped up in a sturdy package built with Volkswagon/Audi parts and offering a pleasant high quality interior.
