I had banked with the Halifax since I was 10 (I am now 42), using the account for special deposits; bonuses, savings and birthday money etc. On ONE occasion I accidentally used my Halifax card instead of my credit card at Tesco. This sent me overdrawn by about 5.00. I was heavily penalised with a bank charge of £65. When I went to the branch to discuss it, I was told that the Halifax didn't need my business (my salary goes into Lloyds) and that I was to pay the £65 charge. I decided to close down my account and the bank manager could not have cared less. I swiftly closed down my 2 children's accounts as well. A hollow victory, but I was not happy with their attitude.
Go to Lloyds, they reward loyalty, and they are reasonable about accidental overdrafts.
