“I owned a TGB 202 Scooter for over a year, using it as...”

written by Dungbug on 11/03/2011

I owned a TGB 202 Scooter for over a year, using it as my daily commute and to runaround on at weekends. I was lucky to find a second hand one for £400 with 3k on the clock.

Having owned Italian and Japanese scooters in the past I was pleasantly surprised with the reliability and performance of this little Taiwanese built machine. Mine was unrestricted and could manage a steady 45mph, nearly 50mph downhill. I used this little scoot all year round in all weathers (ice, snow, rain & shine) & it never failed to start and get me to where I wanted to go. The same couldn't be said for my previous Italian scoot! MPG was excellent as you would expect.

Good points were the afore mentioned reliability & economy, but this is also a well built piece of kit. I fitted an alarm to it and the panels came off and went back on without any problem, nothing broke or refused to go back where it had come from. Parts are easily available as TGB have a good network of authorised dealers throughout the UK. The ride was comfortable and the hnadling was firm and sure, it never worried me taking a roundabout or a bend at speed regardless of wet conditions.

Bad points, not many really. The oil header tank is a bit awkward to get to, you will need a crosshead screw driver to remove the cover flap and a bendy funnel to put the oil in (unless you want to spill oil over the foot plate). The exhaust seem to rust overnight so I treated mine to a generous coat of exhaust paint every few months to prevent it from rusting out, this seemed to do the trick.

A year later and with a mileage reading of nearly 9k she was still going strong. Never failed to start in bad weather and would sit happily at 45mph as always, I sold her on as I needed to use a car for nursery runs but I wish I hadn't sold it. The ride was enjoyable, easy to use and I always knew she'd get me home without any hassle.

Great little ped and I will certainly buy another some time this year due to rising fuel costs.
