As a dog lover myself, I can appreciate how loving a Rottweiler can be to its 'family', however, you only have to encounter one of these on the sharp end to be put off.

They have, in my experience, a major design flaw. While they are able to chase a fleeing cyclist quite competently for a short distance, as I found out while on holiday in Mississippi recently, their bite orientation is directionally limited while running. After dog has caught cyclist it turns head to savage furiously revolving ankle (on pedal), however Rotty physiology means that with head turned to left it slows down, meaning it drops back and has to point head forwards to catch up to sweating, cursing cyclist to have another go. Cycle repeats itself. Luckily, for cyclist, dogs heavy build does not make it a great sprinter.

Wouldn't fancy my chances doing same thing thing with a Doberman, though.
