“I bought the phone online through Vodafone (UK market)...”

written by marksfb on 02/03/2005

Good Points
Excellent inbuilt memory - 64MB (expandable by pro duo cards with some on the market up to 1GB)
User interface - applications are easily accessed and you can pretty much start using the phone straight away
The keypad screen can be removed allowing the phone to slimmer (although care needs to be taken on the screen) and more PDA like
Common operating system allowing more applications to be added to the phone (mostly via internet download to PC / laptop rather than straight to phone)
Full internet and Wap capability
MP3 player
Ability to view, create, amend word, excel, powerpoint, pdf documents.

Bad Points
Keypad inside the flip has buttons that are too small to use and the phone is awkward to hold whilst using buttons
Keypad outside the flip - difficult to feel the difference between the buttons as they are too close together and too flat
Handwriting recognition is based on individual letters rather than words that can be found with some PDAs
Camera / video quality is poor in comparison to other models
Voice recording - playback is too quiet and quality is poor
Speaker phone - whilst the volume is sufficient when listening at home / office if you use the speakerphone to listen to calls in the car the driving noise over 30mph makes it ineffective - the volume should be able to go louder without having to purchase a speaker
Battery life - dont believe the specs published, at normal usage the phone will not last longer than 2 days and if you use the MP3 often you maybe recharging everynight
Long start up times (34 seconds) especially if you have security pin code settings activated
Synchronisation - if you wish to get the most out of your P910i and laptop you will want to synch to swap documents, calendar entries, etc. However there are problems with this synch when you have virus scanners eg McAffee on your laptop and you will get messages eg mrouter failures - this is a known problem in Sony Ericsson but it is not published. Their helpdesk will advise ways round it but these are not easy and it appears the best way is to uninstall your viruscanner reinstall the PC suite with the phone and swop data, then finally reinstall virus scanner.
In most applications the screens are only viewable in the portrait mode, it would be great to have the facility to change the screen view to landscape eg word, internet, powerpoint documents
The headphones that are provided (for handsfree, listening to MP3s, etc) are not normal headphone sized therefore ensuring replacements can only be purchased through Sony Ericsson

General Comments
I bought the phone online through Vodafone (UK market) paying about £150 for an 18 month contract with monthly line rental of about £25 - this included free weekend calls for 6 months, 200 minutes anytime calls and 500 free texts or data equivalent.

I had several years ago bought the Ericsson R380 smartphone which was rubbish with email and internet not working and Ericsson and BT Cellnet (service provider) passing the book on whom to blame. Therefore I was a bit cautious when purchasing this phone but was very happily surprised. Although I have listed several bad points these consist of all the negative things I can think of and only the synchronisation problem is a real hindrance. The other comments would be suggestions or 'nice to haves' on future versions.

The phone is excellent and although the size maybe bigger than some people would like you can always swap your sim into an old smaller phone when your out on the town.

I have owned the phone since October 04 (now March 05) and I would recommend it to anyone who requires a smartphone as the user interface is easy to use (especially with the stylus which is better than using buttons as with some mobile / PDAs), stylish, and impressive. If you really want to know what it can do download the instruction guide from the SE website as many online review / sales sites hold incorrect specs.

You will see that some reviews comment on the reception quality - I have never had a problem using vodafone in the UK.
